Muslims Suffer From Narrow Minded Crisis, Says Perlis Mufti.

Factions emerge among the Muslims in the region as they are suffering from narrow-minded crisis, said Perlis Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin today.

He said as a result of the crisis, the Muslims have the tendency to label those who do not share their views as unIslamic.

"They refuse to accept the views of others and do not give them a chance to ask," he told Bernama at the sideline of the International Islamic Thinking Reformation Seminar here today.

Earlier, he presented his paper themed "Role of Al-Sunnah in Assessing and Managing Religious Thinking" at the seminar organised by the Perlis government, Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM) and Jemaah Muhammadiah Indonesia.

He said the narrow-minded Muslims can contribute to the backwardness of the Muslim society while communities from other faiths were progressing.

On the labelling of Islam as violent and militant, he said this was due to some narrow-minded Muslims who resorted to violence to solve problems, and the enemies of Islam used this group's radical actions to form a generalised view.

He said that Islam needed a new image to bring back its glory, and this is the responsibility of all Muslims.

Dr Mohd Asri also said some ulamak should free themselves from the outdated views and understanding to ensure the revolution of Islam to glorify the faith can take place.

He cited tithe collection as an example where Muslims were too bogged down with fundamentals to the extent that there existed constraints in the use of the funds.

More than 100 participants from ulamak and Muslim intellectuals from Malaysia and Indonesia attended the three-day seminar which will end today. (Adnan Jahaya, Bernama)

What the Dr said is very true, with lots of society-soul-searching thrown in. But can one man's words be powerful enough to convince the conservative majority?
