Insurance Scheme For Senior Citizens A Pas Ploy - Awang Adek

A takaful funeral contribution scheme offered by the PAS-led Kelantan government to senior citizens in the state is a political gimmick to win votes in the next general election, Kelantan Umno Deputy Liaison Chief Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin said here.

He regarded such a move as "impractical" and said PAS was using the senior citizens as a tool to maintain power in Kelantan.

"The scheme offers benefits only after death. If the state government is sincere, why not help these senior citizens when they are alive," he told reporters at a Chinese New Year "open house" in Kampung Bekelam here on Sunday.

He was asked to comment on the action by PAS in collecting copies of identity cards of senior citizens for the Takaful Social Security Scheme which pays out RM2,000, including RM500 for funeral expenses, following accidental death.

Awang Adek, who is Deputy Finance Minister, said it would be more appropriate for PAS to use the financial allocation to improve the living conditions of the poor. (Bernama)

***** If this Takaful scheme offered by PAS is considered a ploy, what term can we use for the many mega schemes the government uses to garner votes?
