Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, First African Woman Deputy Sec Gen Of United Nations Sworn In.

Former Tanzanian Foreign Minister Asha-Rose Migiro was sworn in on Monday as the new United Nations Deputy Secretary General.

In a short ceremony, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon formally inducted Migiro as his deputy, making her the second woman to fill the post since it was first established in 1997 by former Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Migiro previously served as Tanzania's Minister of Foreign Affairs and also as Minister of Community Development, Gender and Children's Affairs in her country.

Secretary General Ban said he is "quite confident she will bring leadership qualities to this organisation."

In response to reporters' comments that the new Deputy might not have the experience or qualifications necessary to fulfill the position, Migiro stressed that good management does not always have to do with the size of the organisation.

"What matters is whether one has the experience, the skills, the dedication and the commitment to work as a team." Migiro told reporters at UN headquarters.

"And my experience in the last week has shown that there is a lot of expertise, there's a lot of skills within the United Nations and I'm ready to tap these skills, combined with my own." she added. (NDTV.com)
