Action Against Mahathir. Umno Supreme Council Backs Down.

I'm not surprised by that news, are you? Despite the noise in the media about 'demands' for the Tun's dismissal or at least his removal from certain posts he holds, nothing like it happened. Not even a rap on the knuckles.

On Dr Mahathir the Umno Supreme Council decided that the Tun should remain as adviser to several government agencies in spite of calls within the party to remove him. However the Supreme Council did caution him and told him to "know his limits when criticising the government."

Regarding the decision on Dr Mahathir, I can understand the reluctance of the party leadership to come down hard as it may have the reverse effect of shoring up support for the former premier and the government will look like vindictive bullies and ungrateful ones at that, who have no respect for an elderly leader and icon.

However the kid gloves treatment of the Klang samseng Zakaria Md Deros comes as a big disappointment. The Supreme Council merely insisted that the Port Klang assemblyman must quit as Klang municipal councillor. NO further action will be taken against him politically. What rubbish! It sends a wrong message down the line that it is ok to cheat, con, rob the poor, enrich oneself limitlessly and all this can be achieved without detriment to your political career.

Is this the lesson that Umno's pemimpin want their younger and junior members to learn? That theft is ok if it is done in the name of politics? If Zakaria can get away with it, losing only his councillor's post, it will encourage a lot of other potential palace builders throughout the nation.

I can imagine Khir Toyo right now, smiling and thinking to himself, "Semuanya OK!"

You wrote: "...It sends a wrong message down the line that it is ok to cheat, con, rob the poor, enrich oneself limitlessly..."

I don't remember anybody charging him with these 'crimes'. Are you not stretching the point that "all this (sic) can be achieved without detriment to your political career"?

Or is it a laboured point, perhaps?

Dear Botak,
He is already under investigation by ACA for precisely those acusations.

Cheat - he obtained the land for his mansion at below market prices. The local government AND its citizens are being cheated.

Con - He implied that he is a person of good standing and law abiding, whereas, he built with approval and owed money to the local council.

Rob the poor - We are the poor and he is robbing us of the benefits from his legitimate taxes owed. For 12 years, by the way.

Enrich oneself limitlessly - he rose from a store clerk to become the "Sultan" of his Palace, within a relatively short time. ACA should ask how. Did he invent a money-making machine to churn out all the cash or find "Ali Baba's" cave full of treasure?

Anon,

Surely investigation is not tantamount to conviction. Yet in saying that I have preempted starting an argument over your various working definitions.

I also like to say I do not know Dato', and neither I do have any interest in politics.

I like the freedom of discussion in the Internet space but I feel the mob mentality is too pervasive. I once related stories in another blog on my past dealings with Tengku Mahalee, which incidentally are complimentary of him, and I was pounced on as if I was a snatch thief caught in my act!

Point taken, botak. Investigation is definitely not tantamount to conviction. I agree with you on the 'mob mentality' bit.

PM Badawi, said what Zakaria will continue with his division post because "He has been a good leader to his division” and that "the wrongdoing is not a party matter. It has to do with the (state) government. It is enough for us to decide that he should not be appointed councillor.” (The Star, Nov 3).

Very interesting. The represented UMNO as a council member because he was appointed because he is a division chief and yet this is not a party matter. As an assemblyman representing UMNO and breaking the law, he is not accountable to UMNO. No wonder we have so much faith in our government. Malaysia tentu boleh!

Didn't Umnoputras order their team mates' YBs to resign or suspend membership whenever these YBs sang a different tune? The matters at hand now are much more detrimental, why the lenient punishment?
