Is Umno Serious About Corruption? Zakaria Case Will Reveal The Answer.

"Umno is unhappy with the abuse of power by its members who hold public office, as these people are expected to set good examples by upholding the law." Thus spake DPM Najib and what an honest statement that. Then he backpedals a little by saying that the party’s supreme council might discuss the case of Port Klang assemblyman Datuk Zakaria Mat Deros and that Umno has not yet made a stand on Zakaria’s position as Klang Umno division chief. Then as if to convince himself (for no one else is) he piously says "but you must understand, Umno is not happy with what is happening!"

This is the type of doublespeak Umno is becoming increasingly notorious for. Even a person who has absolutely no idea of Malaysian politics who reads the above will know that sincerity is totally missing from Najib's pathetic attempt at sounding earnest. And this is the attitude of those from the very top to the rock bottom denizens of our nation's premier political party. This is the atmosphere and culture which allows the Zakarias of Umno to thrive, prosper and loot. Whatever semblance of accountability that existed during the Mahathir days are completely gone. Now it's every man for himself and the Devil take the hindmost.

It is an insult to the position, prestige and power of the Sultan when even a middle-level functionary like Zakaria is permitted to ignore him with impunity. Who provides Zakaria with the balls to remain defiant in the face of a Royal command? Is it the top leadership? Can he survive even a day without their tacit support, encouragement and approval?

Inspite of all that is happening Najib with a straight face still maintains "a wakil rakyat should set a good example because the country’s laws are to be respected by all citizens, and even by foreigners who want to be here. We should not think that if we hold a position, we can set aside the law." Asked if Zakaria and councillors like him were liabilities to the party, Najib cleverly skirts the question and comes back to the same premise "we’re very concerned if they are holding public office. If you hold public office, you must show a good example and above all, respect the laws of the country. That goes without saying."

He cannot answer that question because if crooks are liabilities to Umno and have to be removed, there would hardly be a member left!! But I have to admit that there is a qualitative difference in the Umno pemimpin of now and yore. While the older generation went around in Vespa scooters and smokers preferred Rough Rider cigarettes, the present lot drive SUVs while sporting Gucci glasses. That must count for something.

UMNO is serious about corruption in a way or another, either they means "tackling corruption" or "promoting corruption".

Dear voters, this is a must-watched season finale if you want to know whether is Malaysia the next Nigeria?

If they were serious about tackling corruption, believe me, UMNO would have closed shop a long time ago. The incidents involving the Selangor councillors, now three at last count, is merely a preview of what actually lies below the calm surface. And already this year, we have seen exposes on awarding of contracts and pest control requirements, in the state of Selangor alone.

Most of you are aware to a certain extent, for the past 25 years, that has is a tendency for UMNO strongmen or members whom are deemed politically expendable or politically disloyal to the leadership, to be sacrificed to public as form of entertainment. Panem et Circenses. In this respect, UMNO is actually emulating the operating standards of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Does the readers know that a CPC member cannot be brought before any civil or criminal court, save a party disciplinary hearing? If he or she does appear before a court, it is only because he or she has already been stripped off party posts and membership. Sounds familiar? Think 1998. However, the real serious players are left untouched, especially those with Tunships. A pity. Even if Pak Lah was half as serious as he says about tackling corruption, he can never execute even a quarter of what he has promised for fear of bringing down the House of Cards known as UMNO.

And if UMNO should unravel, let me assure you folks, there will more than enough racist bigotry to go around as the corrupt UMNO strongmen under threat will begin to look for scapegoats. The Malaysian, I, and perhaps some readers out there may recall a Harun Idris and May 13, 1969. Later it turns out that he was corrupted and corrupted others to the core. He was convicted and after his death, no housing estates or apartments was named after him. But the damage was already done, and cannot be undone. And now, it seems Zakaria Deros, and his relatives and cronies, are learning some old tricks from their disgraced former Menteri Besar, judging from the what I have been hearing from the grapevine. This was what Samuel Johnson meant when he stated,

\"Patriotism is the last refuge of the scroundrel.\"

In this case, Patriotism can easily be subsituted with Rabid Nationalism. How amusing that, the very same Scroundrels known as Alis will often wilfully engage in Ali Baba transactions, while in the same breath at PWTC, condemn those Babas for allegedly cheating, misleading, or defrauding Ali. Even, these barefaced liars will not trust Ali the Accountant! Surprise! Surprise! This Scroundrel Ali, having done Ali Babas or what-nots like Zakaria Deros, will be more likely to trust Baba the Accountant more. One can almost smell the fear of PAS and PKR. A particular Tun, whom shall remain unidentified, along with his offsprings are the biggest Scroundrels in this respect. And to think that their stated goal was to empower and assist the Alis of Malaysia and to ensure that they are equal to any task the Babas can undertake.

Therefore here lies the real question. Do we hope, against hope, that some of the more vocal, honest, and credible UMNO strongmen to clean the Augean stables? Or perhaps, though highly unlikely, we see a bottom-up pressure for change from UMNO\'s rank-and-file? Or do maybe we shall sweep it under the carpet and go on as before, hand-in-hand and smiling, Semuanya OK dan Malaysia Boleh?

If May 13, 1969 is our Bogeyman, then what Tun Razak and Syed Albar has wished for our country can be as good as set in stone; and we should be content with ourselves in playing the two very addictive games known as Catching Up With The Joneses and Falling Flat On Our Faces. Remember, the first Muslim, an American lady of Iranian origin, has already been to space. Remarkably, she did not even ask Uncle Sam for a single cent in order to pay for her ticket to outer space. Think about it.

\"But the damage was already done, and cannot be undone\". should read as,

\"...vocal, honest, and credible...\" should read as,

My profound apologies for the typo and other errors.

Its interesting to note that while there is still some hope that 'some' good UMNOrians will do something and rise to the occassion as RG says,

statistically the odds are next 2 zero.

Why ?

It has to do with religious 'disbeliefs' viv a vis beliefs.
