Public Accounts Committee's Questions About Avenue Capital. Government Must Answer Truthfully.
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is raising two questions on the merger between government-linked company Avenue Capital Resources Berhad and ECM Libra Berhad.
One is how the government made its decision to invest in Avenue Capital and the other is how the government managed the company before.
PAC chairman Datuk Abdul Shahrir Samad said: "We've asked Prime Minister Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to decide for Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop and his officers to attend a PAC meeting and give briefing on the two questions."
He said the two questions could show the government's approach in using public funds in its dealings with the private sector.
"We want to hear explanation on the questions of management, policy and the government's strategy in investing in private companies and the subsequent management of the companies, and Avenue Resources will be the topic of this discussion.
"We want to know whether the decisions on Avenue Resources were made with the approval of the Cabinet, minister or ministry's officer which no one knows until now," said Shahrir who is the member of Parliament for Johor Baharu.
**** Hats off to YB Shahrir for being consistent and insistent in his demand for the truth to be told. There are many rumours flying around that a lot of 'orchestration' (definition: an arrangement of events that attempts to achieve a maximum effect) went into the deal for the sole benefit of the first son-in-law, the now notoriously famous Khairy Jamaluddin.
The question of how the decision was made should be supplemented by other questions; Why was such a decision made in the first place? Whom did it solely or mainly benefit? Was the Cabinet sidelined in the decision making and if so, why? Did the PM overstep his powers or misuse them in his capacity as the Minister of Finance? How much of taxpayers money will be lost in the long term?
Had it been a lesser mortal in charge, this demand for an investigation would have stalled and fizzled out in exchange for certain 'considerations' but Datuk Shahrir has often shown himself to be made of sterner stuff. It is hoped that he will keep at it until the truth and nothing but the whole ugly truth is fully revealed.
