Give People The Best Leadership, Urges Pak Lah.

Pak Lah in all sincerity gave the best advice to the political parties in BN. If his advice is strictly adhered to by them and especially by Umno, things would look brighter for Barisan as well as the nation. Except for Umno who has of late been flexing its muscles for all the wrong reasons, the other component parties have by and large been consistent in their words and deeds. The following is the full report from Bernama.

Political parties have to give the best leadership to the people because the people need political stability, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said. "It is our duty and responsibility to maintain political stability. Absence of political stability can result in loss of investment sentiments and undermine efforts towards development of the nation and country," the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman said when opening the 35th Gerakan national delegates conference, here.

He said political parties had the obligation to ensure that the country remained peaceful and safe. He also said that economic and social development plans for the people had to be administered properly and in an orderly manner and must achieve their objectives.

Abdullah said BN component parties had to remain united even though sometimes problems arose in their relationship. "But of importance, however, is that we must be united and must be loyal to the people, king and country," he said.

Abdullah said he hoped that Gerakan would continue to be strong and stable under its new leadership. Gerakan President Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik, who is Energy, Water and Communications Minister, had hinted that he may step down early next year after leading the party for 26 years. "It's my hope, I actually like to see all BN component parties in a position of stability and strength so that they can contribute to the success of the BN," Abdullah said.

He said he felt sad on hearing that Lim would withdraw from politics. "I've known him for a long time, from the time I was a government officer. I remember him as an angry young man ... (for) which he had to pay the price. But, I know that when he speaks, Datuk Seri Lim Keng Yaik is always brutally frank. "He speaks from the heart, sometimes he swears. This is because he is extremely passionate. Who doesn't know Keng Yaik?" he said to the laughter of the delegates and others present.

Lim was a party leader who appreciated the BN, he said. When a decision has to be made, he was often on the side protecting the interests of the BN government and the people, Abdullah said. "Thank you, Keng Yaik, for the cooperation extended to me and to your friends in the BN," he said.

**** With the PM thanking Dr Lim and bidding him farewell, it indeed looks like 'adios amigo' for the Gerakan President.
