Flying the national flag. For whose benefit?

Will someone let me know if there is any other country in this whole wide world which demands its citizens fly the national flag on any occasion including 'National' Day.

Why is it that politicians keep harping on the issue every now and then? Do they get a kick out of seeing flying flags or do they honestly think that by hoisting it the people are expressing their patriotism and loyalty? More importantly do they think they have a legal right to enforce or coerce a person to do so?
