Temple Demolitions - An Excellent Example Of Super Efficiency.

Who said local authorities are lazy and inefficient? Recently I've realized that these local councils are world class performers if only there is sufficient motivation.

Witness the spate of temples destroyed by our well oiled demolition squads to get an idea of the type of ruthless efficiency which even the ultra efficient Germans would be proud of. Our local council bosses when they decide to show their power and split second planning are second to none. When it comes to pulling down simple renovations, tea stalls and temples our local action squads are difficult to beat and their timing precise. At the strike of dawn these industrious workers of the nation are up and about to demolish the sometimes decades old structures without fear or favour. Oh how proud they must feel.

As for the Hindu temples that are yet to be brought to rubble, the MIC has at long last stepped in. Let us see how the much vaunted 'Barisan Spirit' of discussing and solving issues works out this time. Read the following report in Bernama.

****Relocation of Hindu temples in Kuala Lumpur due to redevelopment will only take place after a five-member committee set up through the effort of MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu is consulted by Kuala Lumpur City Hall. The five-member committee, to be headed by Malaysia Hindu Sangam president Datuk A. Vaithilingam with the other members made up of representatives of other Hindu bodies, will discuss current and future temple relocations with City Hall.Samy Vellu said Kuala Lumpur Datuk Bandar Datuk Ruslin Hassan had also proposed to set up a special unit in City Hall to handle all matters relating to temple relocations or demolitions. "Previously, there was no such unit but now the mayor has given the assurance that a special unit will be set up and I thank him," Samy Vellu, who is also Works Minister, told reporters after a 90-minute discussion among City Hall, Malaysia Hindu Sangam and other Indian-based organisations at his ministry, here.

He said City Hall had agreed to refer to the committee any notices for temples to be relocated or demolished in the federal territory. "The committee will go to the ground and try to solve the problem first. If they are unable to do so, then it will be brought to my attention or the mayor." Samy Vellu said it was also proposed that alternative sites be provided for the temples by the developers and ample time given before they would be demolished. He said most of the problems occurred when the temples started to build extensions or wanted to rebuild without getting the approval of City Hall. He also disclosed that discussions would be held to provide an alternative site for a temple which had to give way for the Damansara-Hulu Kelang Expressway in Setapak. "We will also try to speak to the developer to give some sort of compensation for the rebuilding of the temple," Samy Vellu said. On the problems faced by temples in other states, Samy Vellu said these would be handled by the state executive councillors from the MIC.(Bernama)

**** I wonder after this intervention by the MIC if those affected by the demolitions will vote for the BN in the next elections.
