Malaysia's Hardline Islamists Want Ban Of Avril Lavigne Concert

The youth wing of Malaysia's hardline opposition Islamic party, Wednesday called for banning a concert by Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne later this month, saying the singer's "prancing" performances were not suitable for locals. The 23-year-old singer is scheduled to hold a concert, her first in the Muslim-majority nation, in the capital Kuala Lumpur on August 29.

The opposition Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) youth wing slammed the organizers for approving the show, saying the young pop-punk star's loud shows were not in line with local culture. "This show is not suitable for our local culture," said Herman Samsudeen, the wing's information chief.

"Our independence month should be marked by respect ... and not remembered by inviting the offsprings of colonists who will teach our children how to become modern monkeys, prancing around without any purpose," he said in a statement.

Malaysia celebrates it's 51st year of independence of Britain on August 31.

"Approving this concert is a great insult," the statement said.

Herman said the party would send an official protest note to the government to call for cancelling the show.

A party official declined to comment, as Lavigne holds Canadian nationality, saying only that Western influences in general were "damaging" to local culture.

PAS, which has been in control of the northeastern state of Kelantan since 1990, has imposed strict religious laws dictating dress and all forms of entertainment in the state.

Among others, women entertainers are not allowed to perform in public, and men and women have to sit separately in cinemas.(The Earth Times)

After fifty-one years of independence these are the types of ignorant, jaundiced and intolerant specimens we have created and allowed to blossom. Sigh.......

have they not remember that Malaysia is a multiracial nation?.they cant just force others to follow what they want.of course everyone have their own right to say what's on their mind but they should know where to draw the line.

even in arab countries they have their own belly dance.what they have to say about that?

I guess anything that is not in line with their aspiration would not be welcome.

Since they have made lots of 'noises' before, I guess if they kept quiet on this one would be very unbecoming.

I wonder however why is it that only female foreign artists are usually targeted.

Avril Lavigne will be granted permission to perform her if she agrees to dance and prance dressed in a burqa. This means any Minah, Mainachi or Mei Ling can take her place and fool the audience for no one can guess who's actually inside the burqa.

Malaysia is multiracial country, they can protest all they want, but it would not happen. I guess they are obsess with girls, but tempt to prevent their enchanted soul and mind to voice it out.

They must remember that the reasons for prohibiting such concerts will cause many effects. Firstly is the money investment by sponsors and fan supporters. Future business suspended, angry mob by other races..They got to think all of that before deciding to ban such concert.

If they aren't welcoming the artists, may better they themselves not attending or participating in any way of the concerts performed. But dragging all people together is not a good option.

I guess PAS is trying to spread their ideology, but they are doing it the wrong way. Believe me, the concert will still go on.

i am never a fan of avril lavinge but hey~ PAS's proposal to ban the concert only reflects how backward the mentality of the society is!

are they saying that malaysian youth are gullible n supceptible to anything n that they dont know wat is good or bad for them n what is only mere entertainment?

if the rakyat cant handle avril lavinge, how can the rakyat b wise enuff to vote?

"if the rakyat cant handle avril lavinge, how can the rakyat b wise enuff to vote?"

haha.i like that quote.i guess they "had" to make commotion about Avril since they did it before on another concert and they will be looked upon as "inconsistent" if they dont do so.

Every time I tought it just might be safe to give support to PAS, they just have to reaffirm that they are a narrow-minded bigoted party.

Here we go again.....

Once more these brain-washed, narrow-minded Malaysians are imposing their choice of entertainment on others.

Do they really think that this country consists solely of their own kind?

This country is going down the drain and this is further proof of the talibanisation of our society.

They might be sick of rock music but i too am equally sick of their narrow-minded bigoted views and actions.

To those of you who voted PAS just to spite BN.....is this the kind of narrow-minded, chauvinistic and fanatical people you want to lead the country? And these are just the youths! Imagine what they'll be like when they're older!
Don't play with fire!

All I can say is that these are nothing but a bunch of selfish people. Just because they cannot enjoy such a concert, others too (including the non-Muslims) should not enjoy it. As a non-Muslim, I want to attend - SO WHAT!!! These people cannot take that right away from us. If they don't want Muslims to attend, then hang a notice outside the concert hall - FOR NON-MUSLIMS ONLY. Is that so difficult, and yet these are the same blokes who want to run the country. Huh!!!

PAS only have been in power for about 5 month after successful election and they already dare to show such arrogance over other party member in thier coalition? what DAP has to say for this? Pakatan Rakyat will definitely break up if PAS continue to 'Talibanize' the country.

I think that these group of people (FT PAS) are seeking attention. well, they got what they want.

I guess they just target women and rock artistes because they think they are objects of sex, anti-religion and satanic worship. Now how narrow minded is that!

I guess ALL of them are not musically educated - they don't know what is just plain fun "safe" rock than the anti-religion, satan worshiping rock!

anyways, I hope DBKL will grant her the permit she needs to perform and let MALAYSIA ROCK!!!!

I am totally embarrassed with my fellow Malaysians for being so narrow minded. Is it because they are not able to control their sexual fantasies if they see scantily dressed women? Shame for not being able to have self-control, full grown men who are weak. This is only a music concert, and it helps in tourism and worldwide publicity. I hope this gets through their thick head.
