Internal Security Act Not Cruel, Says IGP!
Dismissing the notion that the Internal Security Act (ISA) is cruel, the inspector-general of police says it is still needed to safeguard national security.
Tan Sri Musa Hassan also rejected charges by some quarters that detainees held under the ISA were given no opportunity to defend themselves in court.
"ISA detainees can still obtain their defence by providing evidence of prima facie in court.
"There is an advisory panel which re-evaluates cases of ISA detainees. If the panel says the detainees do not threaten the country's security, we will free them," said Musa, adding that members of the panel were former judges.
He was speaking to reporters after officiating the first meeting of the Asean Regional Crime Prevention Foundation (ARCPF) here Wednesday.
Answering a question from an Indonesian journalist who was covering the ARCPF event, Musa said among the ISA detainess were 13 Indonesians who enjoyed permanent resident status here.
He said they were being detained in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.
The three-day meeting which began Wednesday focusses on the establishment of the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation by emphasising on aspects of crime prevention in drug smuggling, human trafficking and police enforcement.
Also present was acting ARCPF chairman Tan Sri Da'i Bachtiar of Indonesia. (Bernama)
***** This must be the lamest defense of the ISA ever recorded. Is the ISA still needed to safeguard national security or Umno's security?
The IGP should try explaining to the families of those still under detention and see what response he gets. Dumb ass.

Any To Fool would without any reservations aver that the ISA must be maintained to protect the UMNOPUTRAS, their cronies and sycophants both in the Private Sector and the Civil Service ( which includes certain uniformed services) - from the Malaysian Public. Any fool knows this.
There is no need to write numerous thesis or hold Conferences and Seminars to explain otherwise on the matter to the dumb public.
May GOD in all His Divine Glory save the citizens of Malaysia from the denziens of the deep who operate under the cloak of the ISA and other draconian laws which are a disgrace to this fair Nation in the eyes of the World.
You know what, this mattress salesman guy aka musa ought to get a taste of his own medicine.
After PR comes to power, someone should get a hold of this musa guy by his neck, throw him in jail in his underwear, and charge him under ISA.
Only then will he know what he is talking. Only then will he know whether it is cruel or not. Up until now, it is all talk and no practical. He has practically zero experience in ISA to know if it is humane or not. Even Karpal Singh or Kit Siang knows more than him on this.
Cakap lu pandai-lah.
"ISA detainees can still obtain their defence by providing evidence of prima facie in court.
Shouldn't it be that any evidence against the detainees be provided by the prosecution, in this case the police instead of the detainess providing evidence of prima facie.
We have an idiot for an IGP. WE are aware that many an ISA detainess are there on trumped up charges.
Correct, correct, correct. The ISA must be maintained to keep the UMNOputras from being exposed.
The Top Police Lap Dog has spoken!!!!!
