Malaysian Prime Minister Calls For Racial Unity To Mark Chinese Lunar New Year
The leader of Muslim-majority Malaysia called Wednesday for racial unity to ensure the country remains stable and progressive, amid social strains fueled by minority complaints of religious and economic discrimination.
In a message to mark the Chinese Lunar New Year, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the country's stability had come after years of effort to bridge differences among the three key ethnic races.
"I urge all Malaysians to continue to nurture and sustain an attitude of cooperation and compromise, to stay united and appreciate one another because these are keys to our peace and prosperity," Abdullah said. "Malaysia is not owned by any individuals or race. It belongs to all of us, to every Malaysian citizen," he added.
The Lunar New Year, which begins Thursday, is the biggest and most popular annual festival for the Chinese, who account for a quarter of Malaysia's 27 million people. Muslim Malays make up about 60 percent of the population and Indians around 10 percent.
The government has tried to nurture harmony among the three races since the 1969 riots that killed more than 200 people. But minority Chinese and Indians have voiced growing fears in recent years that their religions get second-class treatment.
National debates have erupted over religious disputes prompted by government actions such as a ban on conversions from Islam and the use of the word "Allah" by non-Muslims. Minorities have also complained that interfaith court cases in recent years have tended to favor Muslims.
Indians are demanding economic equality and have protested an affirmative action program for Malays. In an unprecedented show of dissent, some 20,000 Indians held an anti-government demonstration in November.
Abdullah, who faces general elections expected to be called next month, said development programs he launched recently would sustain Malaysia's economic growth and ensure the country remains competitive.
Abdullah's ruling coalition is expected to win in the coming elections but with reduced support amid public anger over growing inflation, crime, corruption and racial tensions.
A recent survey by the independent think tank Merdeka Center showed Abdullah's approval rating slipped to an all-time low of 61 percent in December, from 91 percent in late 2004. (PR-Inside.com)

What dear PM means is that the Non-Muslims should tolerate whatever is done to them (e.g. demolish your temples, tell you what word you can use for God (Allah is not for you), arrest you if you have a peaceful demonstration, confiscate your Bibles & Christian Story Books, Snatch dead bodies of your kin...the list goes on & on).
"Malaysia is not owned by any individuals or race. It belongs to all of us, to every Malaysian citizen," he added.
What utter BULLSHIT from the PM, he is speaking through his rectum!
Lies, Lies, Lies and even more blatant lies.
Does he really think any one will believe such empty and unsubstantiated waffle.
Did he rebuke his comrades when they shouted "Go back to the place where your forefathers came from!" to other races? He kept quiet.
Did he rebuke his coomrades for wanting bath other race's blood with the kris? He kept very very quiet.
When talk about NEP, UMnoputras would argue until their faces turn pale from red with foam in their mouths. And PM said, "don't challenge me."
When GE is nearing, everything matters. Even other races' unreasonable demands become "our duty to take care of all races."
He has not walked the talk in the past 4 years.
Why should we believe him now ?
Yes, you are not to question them! You are not to question their rights! You are not to question their "Ketuanan"! If you do, you should go back form where your forefathers came!
Ya, right! Racial Unity.....hahahahahahahahahaha! They really think we are so stupid?! But then again, if we vote them back in then we ARE that stupid!
Oh. How sweet the PM can be when the voting is coming close.
He must be thinking that his beloved people are stupid enough to be taken for a ride again. Get rid of the ISA, remove the Press Restrictions act, implement in-toto the recommendations of the Royal Police Commission; release the unlawful crude detention of men of conscience who were just taking up the cause of the downtrodden and after that - COME BACK to us and we may listen with ONE ear.
The Rakyat is getting clever enough NOT to trust the word or writing of any politician or some of those who are already having HUGE political ambitions.
In the last 50 years, the generation has changed. The way of life has changed. Technology has changed. Peoples' wants and expectations have changed.
So. do not go about talking as though you are dealing with a crowd during the time of Tun Jaffar Onn.
Our PM often calls for racial unity, which is good. But what exactly does he mean by it? He should define what he means because his idea of it may be different from what we have in mind.
pak lah is a stupid git. he has more stupidity surrounding him than hydrogen. stop voting dumb people. vote Sammy Vellu instead. He's the man.
