Tengku Adnan To UK To Find Out Why Tourists Not Coming. No Need To Go So Far, Just Read The Blogs

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor will leave for the United Kingdom on Nov 10 to find out why tourist arrivals from there have declined.

He said that he would also use the visit to study the tourism trend among the people there to draw up a strategy to attract more Britons to Malaysia.

"We also will be promoting Malaysia, especially eco-tourism in Borneo, Langkawi and Sipadan Island," he told reporters at the "The Best of Belgium 2007" event here tonight.

He said that although tourist arrivals from Europe had generally increased, the level was still unsatisfactory.

The event organised by the Belgian embassy in KL was to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Belgium and also to promote the European country's tourism products. (Bernama)

***** What's so difficult to understand about tourist numbers declining? Why should the hon. minister want to spend public funds and travel, wine, dine and lodge in 5-Star comfort in the UK when the answer can be found from the Internet?

One the one hand our government seems to go out of its way to prove its Islamic credentials while on the other it wishes to assiduously cultivate its friendly relations with the West. It grins sheepishly at the white boys while at the same time it attempts to outdo PAS in presenting an islamic face to the world or at least to that part of it which cares and nods in appreciation. In fact it has created an environment here for Malays to be less Malay and be more Arab than the Arab.

It has simultaneously and openly set the stage to deprive non-Muslims of their inalienable right to practise their faith unhindered and unmolested. The various widely publicized controversies on religious conversions lately is a case in point. The espousal by the government of the legally untenable arguments for the declaration that we are an Islamic state is yet another dampener for those who can read and write and think.

Regular displays of official muscle-flexing in the demolition of temples is another no-no indulged with glee by the authorities. The lethargic approach to fighting corruption and the inertia exhibited in dealing with over-zealous local officials like those in Rela and the khalwat-busters have further muddied an already sullied reputation.

Tengku Adnan himself has been implicated in several controversies, the latest being the 'Lingamgate' video clip imbroglio.

While the mainstream media have mostly glossed over the culpability of officialdom in many of these cases, the Internet media have explicitly described the true situation prevailing in this fair land of ours. The British are not deaf, blind and dumb. They know what is happening here and they don't like it. Therefore they give our country a miss during their travels in the region.

So YB Menteri, don't waste our money going on this junket. Stay home and read the blogs, if you secretly don't already.

He Tengku Adnan must be a bloody fool if he doesn't know why the UK tourists and others are not flocking here.
Malaysia may be cheap, but it is also nasty!
Tourists get ripped off, there are dual prices at attractions, one for locals and the higher on for tourists.
The taxi touts are still at KLIA and are a damn nuisance.
Everything is either not maintained at all, or is very poorly maintained, I could go on and on........
Other destinations offer a much better deal, and beat Bolehland's bullshit everytime.

UK tourist need not come to Malaysia for the beaches, as there are many options for them nearer home.

Shopping ? They have options, too.

They come because of what is perceived to be different.

Multiculturism is one but that seems to be politically incorrect for the incumbent government. For Arab culture, they can go to Dubai or anywhere in the Middle East.

We can offer great varieties of food and this is not just satay. How about roti canai and bak kut teh, truly Malaysian originals ?

Nature travellers should got to Kampung Kuantan for the fireflies (before development makes them extinct), Mulu Caves, Endau Rompin, etc. We have many such places but ...

Another problem for tourists (not just UK ones) is that sign boards and road names are not in the international language of English. How does one encourage a foreigner to explore Malaysia if they think that Jalan Sahala is the longest road in Malaysia ?

I believe we have an embassy in UK and the people working (do they?) there are supposed to send back reports on what's happening over there.

Unless those people who are supposed to work there are not doing their job AT ALL, then i see no reason for this guy to fly all the way there, stay in a 5 star hotel and wine and dine at govt expense.

What a farce to justify the trip. Another ploy to *BS* the kampong people.

Real anecdote:

A Briton friend on a round Malaysia trip I was hosting, asked me what is this atraction called "Pusat Bandar"? Everywhere we went he sees road signs with that description! Must be a popular place he concluded, till I broke the news to him.

The moral of the story:

The government had spent millions in promoting Malaysia. But the moment the tourist arrives, it's a totaly different picture.

Indah khabar dari rupa!

You only have one stab at the tourism pie. Make it count. In this age of instant global communication where everything is but a mouse click away, a couple of bad reviews is all it takes to turn tourist away.

Well said, anon 10:29, it is a simple matter, but the 'thickies' in charge can't even solve it. All over Europe they have a sign "Centrum" which points to the city, town, village centre, this is universal.
Also try driving from KL to say Melaka following the road signs, most likely you will be totally lost.
When new roads are built the old signs are not removed, so for example you can see sign to KLIA pointing in three totally different directions!
We had friends who hired a car in KL and didn't managed to get out of the city during the whole day!
Another common sight is road signs sited when they are obscured by trees, structures or vegetation.
The current state of general lawlessness doesn't help either.
Where are the police if you really need them?
Driving is a nightmare, reckless and dangerous driving, defective vehicles and damaged roads and highways are commonplace.
Malaysia, Truly Deteriorating!

Not forgetting the overzealous religious assholes raiding a hotelroom and checking on foreign couple..........
