"Don't Question Malay Rights," Says Pak Lah. It Looks Like The Others Can Kiss Goodbye To Hopes Of An End ToThe NEP

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said basic matters relating to the sanctity of religion, beliefs and practices, Malay interests and the social contract between the communities should no longer be raised.

The prime minister said basic issues that were agreed upon at the time the Federal Constitution was drafted were non-negotiable.

"Umno does not engage in duplicity. We don't change our tune to suit the occasion or the audience. We're ready to seek intelligent resolutions and win-win outcomes when dealing with sensitive issues relating to race and religion," said Abdullah, who is also Umno president, when addressing the Umno General Assembly here Wednesday.

He said that for such issues to be addressed effectively, it was more appropriate to have these discussions behind closed doors.

"Sensitive issues must be handled objectively, rationally and maturely. Umno and its colleagues in the Barisan Nasional must never be ensnared by religious and racial issues raised by the opposition parties.

"We're the party that controls the government, we administer executive power. We should never allow ourselves to sink to their level," he said.

Abdullah said that other communities in the country must appreciate the sensitivities of the Malays.

"We've been independent for 50 years. Now, those who are born in Malaysia are Malaysian citizens. They were born and have grown up knowing only Malaysia as their homeland. The time for championing parochial interests is over," he said.

Abdullah said that during the 2006 Umno general assembly where the media were allowed to provide live coverage of the proceedings, a small number of speakers had raised issues that had perhaps touched on communal sensitivities but the majority chose to tackle them from a national perspective.

"I believe that similar extremist sentiments are voiced by members of political parties that represent other communities. However, in the spirit of building a unified nation, the consensus of moderation and mutual respect outweighs extremist tendencies," he said.

Abdullah also explained that the act of unsheathing and kissing the Malay keris was part of the cultural heritage of the Malay people. (Bernama)

***** Just a few questions and comments and I hope the PM won't consider these as 'questioning Malay rights'.

1)
Umno does not engage in duplicity - Then what is the term we should use to describe the act of saying today, "don't question our rights," but only yesterday the propaganda was the government is fair to all?

2)
'Sensitive' issues are better discussed behind closed doors - Have these 'brotherly' discussions purportedly held in total secrecy produced any positive results? As far as we know, year in and year out, the deprived scream for justice, the non-Malay BN 'leaders' are made to look like powerless eunuchs while our pemimpin Umno issue the same stale warning - "don't question our rights."

3) The
other communities in the country must appreciate the 'sensitivities' of the Malays - Don't other communities have sensitivities that Umno should respect and regard with patience and sympathy? Even animals have sensitivities of sorts.

4)
The time for championing parochial interests is over - Then why is Umno still touting ketuanan Melayu, wielding keris, perpetuating the NEP and threatening fellow citizens with a shrill "don't question our rights"?

5)
Similar extremist sentiments are voiced by members of political parties that represent other communities - Do two wrongs make a right? Is it not true that the extremist sentiments and acts practiced by Umno as a party and as a major stake-holder in government, far outweigh what all the others combined have done?

Does he think before he speaks or does he like a parrot dish out words authored by his speech writers. He has been doing that every time he meets component parties of BN.
He says “The time for championing parochial interests is over,". What the heck is he speaking now?

The component parties including the opposition speak about marginalizing the non-Malays, and, if it does not happen, will he, boasting he is the PM for all do that. Don’t act like a chameleon or practice double talk. Say something that is intelligent because you as the supreme leader cannot be parochial and controversial.

How come only this year you have realized the keris issue was part of the cultural heritage of the Malay people whereas in the preceding year you never said anything? Is it because you won’t to follow the explanation given by your Youth leader and now suddenly unsheathing a kris becomes cultural heritage.

NEP was not part of the original 1957 social contract.
The special position of bumiputera should be reviewed after 15 years of merdeka.

An alternative was in fact issued a few days back by their youth chief, I think, to the effect that you could always apply for Singapore citizenship if you felt disenfranchised. They have begun to rule with total impunity vis-a-vis malay rights. The middle ground has been eliminated. Yes, it definitely looks like the NEP will be around for eternity!!

Distrust, disagreement, quetionable loyalties, demanding more share of power, issisting for unlimited equality, equal rights... PM bodoh, ministers bodoh, politicians corrupt, judicial imcompetence, crisis in judicary, religous and racial insults, increasd crimes, pampering govt. servants with undeserved merits, rising living cost with deminishing quality. Continued rheoterics calling for Bangsa Malaysia while UMNO for malays, MCA for chinese. MIC for Indians. Everybody wants to retain thier tradition and culture. No one wants to make concession. Everybody wants more and more forgetting the true history of Malaya. You want equal rights to grab what already belonged to someone else. You want to remove malay rights, Sabah rights and Serawak rights. You also want rulers removed and turn country into republic. ARE WE OBLIVION OF THE CATASTROPHE? Are sure we are ready for this?. Our children, some of them are ill guided turning melitant to take up the cause will bear the consequenses all because of the presence of so called racial champions. Pls be reminded the situation is indeed heated -up and it is close to its boiling point.Let's live for another thousand years. Handle things politely with courtesy and repect for all mankind and human race. Pl emulate the style of History Prof. Dato Khoo.

The Cantonese proverb: "Displaying (or hanging) goat's head, but selling dog's meat".

Saying one thing but doing another thing, all sounds familiar. During Dr Mahathir's time, the former PM puts his own ideas or scrutinized his speeches and at the end of the official opening, the press or component parties get a copy of his written (or spoken) speeches. But not this hypocrite. Blar...blar...and losing his thoughts or just playing an old broken record. Evenif he read, he forget having read it and repeat the same sentence again.....maybe needed a good rehearsal...or that his speech writer repeated the written sentences by error. It's a disgrace in front of foreign dignitaries.
