Controversial Video Clip - Royal Commission To Investigate, Says Pak Lah

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, contrary to what many of us thought, has just announced that based on a report by a three-man panel, a royal commission will be set up to probe a video clip featuring a purported telephone conversation between a prominent lawyer and a senior judge.

The video clip of the lawyer allegedly brokering judicial appointments had caused an uproar nationwide and there were heated demands for the establishing of a royal commission. But the government perhaps to cool things down, instead created the 3-man panel to investigate. While many opined that it was an eyewash the panel went about its job and the findings apparently confirm the long held suspicion of the public that all has not been well with our judiciary.

The panel formed to investigate the authenticity of the video clip comprised former Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Haidar Mohd Noor, social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye and former Court of Appeal judge Datuk Mahadev Shankar. They completed their report on Nov 6 and later briefed the Cabinet on their findings.

The PM should be complimented for making such a quick announcement and hopefully the said commission would get down to its duties at the earliest. Now all that remains to be seen is whether those who would be appointed to the royal commission are credible persons who enjoy the confidence of everyone, or at least most of us. The likes of Nazri for example should not be allowed within a three mile radius of the commission office.
