Umno's Obsession With 'Hubs'

The government is committed in its endeavour to revive Southeast Asia as a hub of Islamic civilisation, Deputy Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

He said the government's effort to make Malaysia a "halal" hub, a hub of education excellence as well as an intellectual network hub was testimony of the commitment.

Opening a seminar on religion and development organised by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) here, Zahid said history showed that this part of the world had been a centre of Islamic civilisation in the past.

"The strategic and important position and role of the Melaka Islamic government was the primary reason for the West's interest in the region then. It achieved an era of Islamic excellence and became the focus of trade and a meeting place of the world's main civilisations," he said.

Zahid also said the government was striving to mould exemplary Muslims through the Islam Hadhari (Civilisational Islam) vision.
