More Made-In-China Products Recalled. This Time Due To Toxic Content

Mattel South-East Asia (Malaysia) Pte Ltd is recalling three made-in-China Fisher-Price products because they have excessive amounts of lead.

The three toys -- Barney Best Manner Phone (pic, above), Sing and Play Alpha Book, and Sesame Street Giggle Surprise Giggle -- are amongst the nearly one million toys US toy giant Fisher-Price said it was recalling.

The toys were sold in US stores between May and August, the company said, according to agency reports.

"Paint on some of these products could contain lead in excess of permissible levels," the company said in an announcement.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission warned that "Consumers should immediately take the recalled toys away from children and contact Fisher-Price."
The recall included around 80 items, including playsets, toy vehicles, figures and musical instruments, AFP reported.

Fisher-Price, a subsidiary of Mattel Inc, said the items were produced by a single contract manufacturer in China but did not give the company's name or location. (TheStar update)

This is scary. I bought the Barney phone for my toddler last year. I'll have to contact Mattel Malaysia to see whether this was limited to a bad batch or has been a problem for since last year.

If I have to take my kid to see a doctor over this, I might consider seeing a lawyer as well.

Most of us know enough to be careful of products made by China companies, but for a product from a reputable company like Fisher-Price to be affected as well really makes the whole "Made in China" range suspect.
