Most Malaysians Not Taking Angkasawan Programme Seriously. Is That Surprising?
Reported in TheStar update today is the lament by the National Angkasawan Programme director Col Dr Zulkeffeli Mat Jusoh.
A very unhappy Dr Zul said that "a recent survey revealed that Malaysians think it’s a waste of time and money, and that we’re just going to undertake a ‘little’ science project once our angkasawan (astronaut) is sent into space. Worse, many are still under the assumption that we are going to play gasing (top) or make teh tarik (tea) in space!"
He emphasized that nothing could be further from the truth. "Our objective is to uncover monumental findings in the field of science and many countries, the United States and Russia included, are eager to see the results of our experiments. These include studying liver cancer and leukemia cells, bacteria, protein crystallization and the physics of objects in space." he told a press conference.
Dr Zul said that the study of an object’s physics in space, such as a spinning top (the source of the public’s mockery on the experiment) was not to be misunderstood. "There is clearly a huge misconception from the public about our objectives here," he added.
***** To be fair one has to admit that the average Malaysian has been picking on the Angkasawan programme ever since the announcement of the space trip was first made. What drew the 'antipathy' of the people was that the project itself was seen as a trade-off (costing additional tens of millions of ringgit) merely to facilitate the purchase of Soviet jets. Adding to this suspicion and ire were the rumours that 'some person or persons' had made a fortune in kickbacks.
Not helpful was the media report which was given wide coverage that our successful astronaut would be playing 'batu seremban', spinning gasing and roti canai-tossing in space while making teh tarik for the rest of the crew on the ISS. While the primary aim of that hype was to highlight the 'unique Malayness' of the astronaut's activities in space, and hopefully gaining much goodwill for the ruling party, it dramatically backfired and the whole project became a laughing matter and a point of ridicule.
There is no doubt, serious and very credible experiments will be carried out by our angkasawan. However that cannot compensate for the fact that voyaging into outer space is not something new or one which still invokes awe, the way it did a couple of decades ago. Recently an Asian-American woman, Sunita Williams, broke a couple of records including NASA astronaut record for longest time in space. Compared to that feat this journey by our astronaut pales in significance and is considered in today's world as something almost pedestrian.
Therefore to expect great excitement or unrestrained jubilation at this point in time is not very realistic. Once our astronaut completes his journey and returns home, I'm sure that every Malaysian will be justifiably proud of him and will congratulate and welcome him wholeheartedly.

Of course, upon his return, he will be conferred a datukship for his taxi ride to space, paid for no less by the rakyats' hard earned money!
Vote BN not!
Ughhh pardon me but cant you just imitate the "physics" of object in space, put them in artificial anti-gravity vacuum area. I think that's worth less, then use the money, create jobs for the dirt poor.
The real object of this expensive Russian taxi ride to space is to show to malays that apart from parachuting down near the north pole, they are capable of going to space. The proposed experiments to study liver cancer and leukemia cells, bacteria, protein crystallization and the physics of objects in space have already been conducted last century by the russians and americans.
Why am I not excited about this Angkasawan programme? First, as much a I do not wish to sound racey, but coming from UMNO, I see this as a Malay project and not Malaysian. Even if these two guys had gone to Mars, I still would not be jumping for joy. Second, this is a taxi ride and therefore no big deal. Third, it involves our hard earned money which could have been better used on the ground rather than in space.
We are paying them got get there for teh tarik and play gasing? hahaha, what a national joke.
they don't even choose a proper candidates who know astronomy for the program.
now, who is the one who are not taking it seriously in the first place?
it is not your fault of course in fact you are doing a great job !
but we nowadays think yours is a comedy blog ! hahaha !
The money would be better spent by putting the pm in the space taxi and NOT bringing him back
"Once our astronaut completes his journey and returns home, I'm sure that every Malaysian will be justifiably proud of him and will congratulate and welcome him wholeheartedly."
Are you sure, THE MALAYSIAN??
I'm not proud of it, it's only a taxi ride. I have nothing to congratulate, it's a waste of time & our money.
If it is something great & to be proud of, the rich Asian countries like Japan, Korea, Taiwan or Singapore would have already done it before us.
Our politicians made us looked so stupid.
"Our objective is to uncover monumental findings in the field of science and many countries, the United States and Russia included, are eager to see the results of our experiments." said Dr Zul.
Malaysian, the word you should have boldened was 'monumental', not 'uncover'. That means 'huge', 'immense', meaning that what they will find in their experiments will be immensely significant. Yes, right.
It is this type of hyperbole that puts people off and not take it seriously.
So when are they going into the "core" of the earth? Another momumental achivement? What a "kiasu" mentality, inferior complex in tha name of science!
Somehow, the novelty of space travel has lost its glitter. Today, any billionaire can buy a ticket and blast off for fun. So a Malay Malaysian in the outer orbits of Earth is a non news item, even for us at home. Money down the drain, if you ask me. Waste of time, waste of resource, it ranks on the same level as the Mat rempits jumping out of the Russian tour plane. So what's new?
To sum up our angkasawan programme from all the above comments:-
1) Just an expensive taxi ride.
2) Worthless.
3) Experiment can be simulated.
4) Show off.
5) Experiment already done before.
6) Money can be better used.
7) Not taken seriously.
8) Hyperbole.
9) Made us look stupid.
10) Inferior complex.
11) Waste of time & money.
12) Non-news item.
So, there you heve it, 12 reasons what the average rakyat thinks of the space programme.
Now, THE MALAYSIAN please give me one reason why I should be proud of it!!?!
I m a no politician nor a scientist, I m an ordinary Malaysian. I m very proud of Malaysians Malays, Chinese and Indian who were selected to undogo the training and rigorous selection process, eventually two Malays were selected by the Russians professionals and experts for the final training and final selection for sent off to space. Having been to Johnson Space Centre myself in Houston, I m very proud of the two final candidates who wil be going to Houston for a training session at NASA. Why should it be racial or political issue? Wise up! Our would be astronaut is not just a passenger for a taxi ride, he is a real qualified one with a lot of knowledge and experience to share with fellows Malaysian school kids especially as inspiration and motivation to make the subjects of science related to space exploration more interesting. A Malaysian like them has been in space as a professionally qualified astronaut!. Of course compared to crossing the English Channel by Malik, sailing around the world by Mansor with millions ringgit yacth and hi-tech equipment, going to north and south poles at millions of riggit by Mazlina and jumping on north poles, this Astronaut project is more significant and meaningful for future Aerospace technology and exploration for other fellow Malaysians. So what if Taiwanese, Japanese or Singaporean have not done it? Please don't look down on us Malaysians. Chinese mainland have sent Astronaut to space on their own, please use this as a good example. We will be able to develope our space technology to that level one day, this is just a beginning and certainly it will encourage students' interest at least... Critical thinking is good if it is constructive. Otherwise, it may come from a bad mind with a bad intention and it may just come from a bunch of loosers!....Congratulation to the selected Atronauts Capt. Dr. Faiz and Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar. You are the best in mind and body and hopefully at heart also. Please impart your knowledge and experience to Malaysian kids when you return from space regardless whether they are Malay, Chinese or Indian kids. They are innocent kids hopefully their minds will not be corrupted as their fellow adults as shown in this blog...
By the way, the blog link has changed to www.angkasawan.com.my/blog.
