Dr Mahathir Defends Never Ending Policy; Sings The Same Tiresome 'Malays Are Disadvantaged' Song.

Malaysia is the best developed country among developing countries despite practising affirmative action policy, said former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad., reports Bernama.

In defending the policy which provide advantages to Bumiputeras in areas such as education, economic and job opportunities, Dr Mahathir said that affirmative action if used judiciously could yield good results.

He said in Malaysia there are not only different ethnic groups with different religions but also economic disparity between the races.

"Economic disparity, if allowed to continue will get worse. Then there will be instability. Disparity always create tension between groups even if they are ethnically the same. The birth of socialism and communism was due to economic disparity...a feeling that they were cheated by capitalists," he said.

Mahathir said this in a television interview by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Saturday when asked about the affirmative action policy and and the recent criticism by the European Commission's head of delegation to Malaysia, Thierry Rommel.

***** Therefore it is crystal clear whether Dr Mahathir comes back to power (an unlikely event) or if any other Umnoputra were to sit in the Prime Minister's chair, there will be no qualitative change at all for a majority of the truly disadvantaged people of this country i.e. the genuinely poor of all races. However there is some truth in the former PM's logic and we can take consolation that he at least qualified his defence of the NEP by saying "affirmative action if used judiciously could yield good results." But judiciousness and good judgment unfortunately cannot co-exist with words like amok and keris.

Moreover our pemimpin2 will talk and talk while throwing crumbs to the party faithful. For most of the others it'll be the same old sorry and sad reality: every man for himself and the devil take the hindmost. And you had better be grateful for that, or else .....

after more than 20 years in power, there is still a wide disparity between the income of bumis and non-bumis.

y?

bumis are soooo protected that they are just turning into lazybones waiting to be spoon fed.

i'd say, kick some butt. have an open market and we'll see how the bumis sink (and hopefully rise stronger) instead of feeding the obese egos of protected bumis..

We can flog this NEP horse till the cow comes home & it will not change an iota the present status quo.

The ruling coalition is using the NEP to stay on in power at the expense of weakening the malays.

No bulls, they know it & as long as it serves their purpose they don't give a damn about the average Malay!

Vote BN Not!

you fellas are missing something,
do you honestly think that after 20 yrs of enforcing the rule to the detriment of other races, Mahathir is going to suddenly come out and say "i made a mistake!?"

Hell NO. Cos if he did,it wld prob mean the automatic dismissal of just such system. the non-malays wld prob crucify him for ruining their quality of life, the malays for having lost their golden eggs.

you honestly think he's gonna say he was wrong?

Didn't he say with tears in an assembly some years ago before his retirement that Malays should discard the clutch? Was he serious? of course no.

After 50 years UMNO in power, how many benifited from NEP? Well, maybe just a handful of UMNOputra families. Is that a good policy?

The hardcore poor still very poor. those enriched Umnoputras are getting richer everday.

So, can u call it a good policy?

By neglecting the economically disadvantaged Indians, do you think there will be stability. Just wait and see.

NEP, if need to tbe implemented, should involved the poors of all races.

There is a way out. But first the average/ordinary Malays must be convinced that there is an alternative besides NEP.

I think that there is a lot work to be done in this regard.

It is no good for non_malays and especially for some Malays (these are a minority) to say that Malays are lazy, or just waiting to be spoonfed etc. This will make things worse.

What people have to do is to move the opinion of the average Malays from being supportive of the NEP to a position of wanting to move beyond NEP.

Can The Malaysian blogger and other commentators here do that?
