Great Malaysian Racial Divide Evident In The Senate Too

From Bernama comes this report: Senators Support Maybank's Pro-bumi Policy

Several members of the Dewan Negara today voiced their support towards the policy of Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) in requiring legal firms to have 50 per cent Bumiputera interest for them to become its panel of solicitors.

The bank should continue with the policy and not to bow to pressures from any quarters who were unhappy with it, they said.

Senator Datuk Syed Ali Alhabshee described the policy as positive to narrow the gap between the Bumiputeras and non-Bumiputeras in terms of the number of legal firms that were made panels of solicitors in the banking sector.

"I want to ask Hong Leong Bank and Public Bank, how many bumiputera legal firms have they appointed as their panels," he said when debating the motion of thanks for the royal address.

He said the decision by Maybank to impose the 50 per cent requirement was appropriate to enhance Bumiputera interests in legal firms involved in the banking sector.

He said that all the while, it was difficult for Bumiputera legal firms to get contracts or deal with other banks and Maybank's move should not be regarded as racist.

Senator Datuk Azizah Abd Samad also supported the move and described it as the bank's social obligation to the Bumiputeras. "The decision was made by the management of Maybank without pressure from any quarters and as such should be respected and not questioned by any quarters at any forum," she said.

On May 4, Maybank issued a statement that any legal firm wishing to do business with the group must have to have three partners, including a Bumiputera with 50 per cent equity in the company.

***** Basically no one really pays attention to the esteemed members of the Senate who are generally considered deadwood rubber-stampers sent to the Dewan Negara either to live out the last days of their uninspiring and unimpressive political life or as reward for third-raters who won't fit anywhere else in the real world of politics. Therefore one shouldn't read too much into the opinions they express which either tend to be pathetically sycophantic or reflecting brashly pro-NEP racism. And specimens like the fire and brimstone preaching Syed Ali Alhabshee, a former envoy to Saudi Arabia (he would probably stick out like a sore thumb in any other country) are well known for espousing ridiculous causes as he screams, rants and raves even over beer advertisements.

I don't think that Maybank or for that matter any business concern is going to give credence to the 'considered' opinion of these so-called 'Yang Berhormat'.

We cannot compare the position of Senators in the United States and here in Bodohland. All said and done, facts are facts. The quality and credibility leave little to be desired as far as a House of "rubber-stamps". The banks can do what they want and non-bumis can do what they feel. No need to publicly argue anymore. The straw has broken the camel's back. Enough is ENOUGH!

The Senators in the US, Philippines and other countries have to face their electorate every 4 years. However, the bums over here are appointed as senators after failing to get elected

It is a known fact that the practice here in the appointment of senators range as political rewards to loyal diehards. Those who are committed and decidated cronies to the top leader of a political party. Those who have made big donations to the party and those who have run errands of sorts for donkey years to certain top leaders. Of course, it is also a last stop (appointment) for permanent retirement. So a MP can be later appointed as Senator. But I am not sure whether they can draw pensions as former MPs, former Senators as well as former ministers...all roll into one.

So senators also toe the great line. Don't expect wonders from these potential retirees. They owe much obligations to their political masters too. So much for distinguished services. Forget the credibility part.

Instead of the bumi lawyers having only a 50% share in the firm of lawyers to be on the bank's panel why not have only bumi partners of the law firm. Then, that law firm will have 100% bumi equity which should more than qualify them to be on the bank's panel

If such a 100% bumi law firm still cannot qualify to be on the bank's panel they should ask why that should be so. Especially, when the bank is a GLC bank.

Perhaps, the answer is that such a 100% bumi law firm may not good enough to be considered to be on the GLC's bank panel.

In that case it is obvious that the policy is to enable the bumi lawyers (who may not be good enough for the bank) to take a free ride on the capabilities and abilities of the non bumi lawyers. They get 50% for not being good enough on their own. They need others to work for them. Such parasites

See Malaysiakini report today (May 16): Three senators called for the banning of the publication by Dr Kua Kia Soong entitled: "May 13". According to the report, the Internal Security Ministry have seized publications from a major bookstore.

Who are the three seantors? This latest move should be posted in your blog inviting public opinions.

Agree with delphi. Banks should include 100 % Bumi law firms , together with the non-bumi firms,on their panel and let consumers choose which firms they wish to deal with.
BTW we should scrap the House of Senate if its just a source of pocket money for Barisan appointees.

Why does MBB and other GLC companies still think that everyone owes the bumis a living. Why are the bumis such beggars that they think everyone owes them a living. For this, I will always despise the bumis who will continue to be no good at all. They are a disgrace to all mankind.
