Information Ministry Dreams The Impossible Dream.
Information Ministry staff have been urged to change their attitude and work culture to ensure that the ministry remains relevant and capable of competing with the private broadcasting stations. The staff must change especially in terms of decision making and their action so that they were no longer bound to outdated practices to ensure the quality of their products and services.
Old clichés such as `waiting for inspiration', `orders from the top', `anything will do', `as long as we are on air', `just satisfactory', `working hard won't get you anywhere', `we are not a corporate body' and so on should no longer be used. They should be replaced with `just a click away' because the fact is that all the vagueness in carrying out your task will become clear by just pressing a button on the keyboard. Factors such as strong competition, lack of skill and the government servant mentality should also not be used by the staff as an excuse for their inability to compete.
Among the approaches that could be adopted to remain relevant were corporate communication and excellent human capital. They included the emphasis on being customer friendly, courtesy, sincerity, transparency and openness in communications within the organisation. In terms of competitiveness the ministry and all its agencies, especially Radio Television Malaysia (RTM), must be creative to be on par with its competitors.
**** This is the best message that has come out from the information ministry in ages and I like the sound of it. Whoever thought of it deserves a prize. That person or persons is in sync with what is required to make the ministry and its agencies not only relevant but even desirable.
If only this very laudable approach can be translated into action (nothing wrong in hoping for miracles is there?) and sustained effort and pressure is put on the staff, there may be still hope for this currently moribund ministry.
One way for the would-be rejuvenators would be to ease out the long-staying, senior personnel as well as the non-performers. Older staff usually are already 'frozen' in their ways while the unmotivated and lazy ones will only try to put hurdles to change. While some may not agree, it would be a safer bet to wipe the slate clean and start afresh.
Whatever happens, I wish the ministry all the best in introducing a new and modern work culture more suited to the times and to the expectations and demands of an increasingly sophisiticated viewership.
