KL Mayor 'Disappointed' By Poor Response To Merdeka Celebration. I'm Not Surprised, Are You?

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Ab Hakim Borhan is disappointed with the attitude of city folks, especially business owners who have yet to display the Jalur Gemilang (national flag) or put up decorative lights on their buildings even though the 51st year of independence (Merdeka) will be celebrated on Sunday.

If there was a flag, it was too small and not strategically placed, he told a news conference at his office Wednesday.

Ab Hakim said the owners of these premises seemed half-hearted in their efforts to celebrate and their attitude disappointed him although they had been given reminders.

"Look at the buildings here. Only a few put up the Jalur Gemilang and decorative lights. It's not wrong for me to say that no festive atmosphere can be felt for Merdeka. Don't wait for a minister to come down and ask them (premises owners) to put up the Jalur Gemilang and decorative lights," he said.

Ab Hakim said the public could buy the national flag at cost price from City Hall's treasury department in Jalan Raja Laut or its eight branch offices. "DBKL (City Hall) will also give out the Jalur Gemilang for free to those who pay taxes at the counters," he said. (Bernama)

***** Either this datuk bandar guy has been living in cuckoo land for the past few years or he's so out of touch with reality that he actually feels disappointed at the tepid public response! Just take a look at the cars on any road in any city or town and you'll notice that an overwhelming majority of them are not flying the flag.

Over the past decade the government has made the flying of the Jalur Gemilang synonymous with loyalty, gratitude and appreciation of the rakyat for our kerajaan. Now that the people are pissed off with these government chaps, especially those from Umno, they see no reason why the public should help boost the egos of these corrupt politicians by listening to and obeying their exhortations.

Therefore the KL mayor and all his superior officers can cry with disappointment and scream for flags to be flown till the lembus come home, but no way brudder. No way are we going to give you the pleasure of pushing us around and forcing the flag down our throat.

I believe the mayor thinks that politics and patriotism don't mix. He should check with the politicians running the country next time.

These politicians are lucky that they havenot yet seen the flag being flown upside down physically, though the flag was already flown upside down in the cyber world.

I am keeping my Jalur Gemilang safely tuck in my cupboard instead of flying it & getting it contaminated with all the filth of corruption, feeces of apathy & toxic disunity heaped on by the present HP6 government.

My Jalur Gemilang will be flying proud on the dawn of a new people's government!

Anonymous,
By all means celebrate with your friends and family, just boycot the government events. That is one good way of sending the message of rejection to Najib and Badawi. Fly the flag high as it does not symbolise the corrupted government. The pride of Malaysian must be maintianed but stay away from government sponsored events, unless you condone corruption in the government. Let umnoputeras with no shame or pride celebrate on their own.
No to corruption

Guess some Malaysians don't really cherish the very independence that our forefathers had struggled to achieved.

Wilayah KL should be represented by an appointee by the Pakatan coalition and not by UMNO. How many seats has BN won in Wilayah? If the state constitution states that whoever controls the most seats must form the government, then this should equally applies to Wilayah. This mayor should not be recognised...we are disappointed too.

To the BN (read: UMNO), if you fly the "Jalur Gemilang" you are patriotic!
I do agree that we should fly our National flag. I do so every year.
In fact I have one on my deak 365 days a year.
However, being patriotic also consists of not raping Malaysia & Malaysians, which the BN have been doing for the last 51 years!
After all these years, we are more tha ever divided & from what we are seeing daily, nothing is going to change as long as we have the BN (read: UMNO) continually "screwing" us!

I'm also disappointed with with the rich and ungrateful business people. Reaping all the benefits of the country and yet show no sense of patriotism.Even flying the flag upside down.
