Ali Rustam Says RTM Should Not Air Ahmad Shabery-Anwar Debate.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam has called for a halt on any plans to air the upcoming debate between Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on RTM.

"It's not relevant and should be cancelled," he told reporters after opening the annual general meeting of the Malay Contractors Association Malaysia, Saturday.

He said it was not proper for the state-run television station to air the debate as it involved Anwar who had always been keen on bashing the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

Ali, who is Melaka chief minister, was commenting on the debate -- themed "Hari Ini Membentuk Kerajaan, Esok Turun Harga Minyak" (Form the government today, reduce the oil prices tomorrow) -- scheduled for July 15 at the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

Ahmad Shabery and Anwar have confirmed their participation in the debate which may be telecast live.

Anwar had previously said that the Pakatan Rakyat (People's Alliance) would reduce the fuel prices if it formed the government.

Mohd Ali said there were many other leaders who had the credibility and had worked hard to help the government, who could be invited for a televised debate on the issue. "We should invite members of non-governmental organisations who have been helping the government to explain the issue rather than a person who have nothing good to say about the government," he said.

Mohd Ali also objected to a proposed forum to discuss issues related to Malay supremacy and social contract, saying that such a forum could create racial tension. (Bernama)

***** In which part of the Malacca Air Keroh forest reserve has Ali Rustam been spending the past few years? The one important issue affecting most Malaysians today is the fuel hike and its attendant side-effects. Yet old Ali here says that it is 'irrelevant'!

Also isn't it sheer stupidity to invite some government well wisher to debate the minister when it was Anwar who claimed that he'll bring down prices if he forms the government? Bung Ali has absolutely no idea of what a genuine debate is all about. Can't blame him. After all he's been having sham debates in the Malacca state assembly all this while, so much so he has developed an aversion for the real McCoy.

He seems to have a great dislike for Anwar now. Apparently he has forgotten that at one time he used to crawl on bended knees before prostrating at Anwar's feet when the latter was DPM. Oh Rustam, Rustam.

For people in the position of Ali, the price hike for fuel or any other hike for any other item does not dint their pockets. So one cannot expect Ali to have any feelings or sincere concerns for the plight of the masses until of course one day another Tsunami sweeps him into the Air Kroh reserve.

People are simply staggering not knowing what to do and how to continue living with the prices of most items going up and up and up. Some are even appearing to go off their minds.

Those in power - or those still in the the sordid darkened corridors of power - and those who are learning and carrying out the fine art of hoodwinking the public do not have anything to worry about even now. They are still well looked after by the State and their ......

If Anwar can help reduce the price of oil - why not. Maybe he has the knowhow having been a former Finance Ministe and Deputy Prime Minister and perhaps also having picked up more ideas during his sojourn as a Guest at His Majesty's resort.

It seems somewhat surreal that when the name of Anwar comes up that everyone in the upper echelons of BN go into a state of frenzy and panic as though Anwar is going to swallow all of them up.

There may be some truth in the stories that when Khomeni took power in Iran that more than 10,000 Civil Servants and Top Bras were summarily executed.

Maybe this thought sometimes strikes the minds of some who are still around having survived the Tsunami.

While I don't agree with subsidies, I don't agree with an instant 70cents hike either.

What is good about all of this is that FINALLY someone from BN has the guts to faceoff in a public debate. The Malaysian people are more mature than most politicians or the so-called BN Leaders.

It's good that we're taking a step in the right direction. What's disturbing is that Anwar will either have to sit this one out, or take the interview in the Turkish Embassy.

What's even more embarassing is a BN man, thinking RTM belongs to BN. Some people never learn.

All in all though, I look forward to the debate, and see it as a landmark, that we're finally having government-opposition debates in an open and transparent manner.
