Another Bunch Of Religious Loonies

The powerful Sanatan Dharma Mahasabha (SDM) in Trinidad and Tobago has joined forces with other religious groups to protest the government's decision to install condom vending machines in the country.

SDM secretary general Satnarayan Maharaj said the move would encourage promiscuity. "Condom vending machines would encourage the development of a condom culture in society," Maharaj said.

Maharaj has called the condom vending machines "a bogus rationale" in the fight against illicit sexual activity and by extension, the fight against HIV/AIDS. There are 520,000 Indo-Trinidadians in this country. (Daily News & Analysis)

***** No one religion has monopoly over fanatics and softheaded imbeciles. At least on that score all religions have something in common. To these zealots, it does not matter if millions over the next decade die of HIV/AIDS as long as their religious convictions and conscience is soothed by the total elimination of one practical defence against the deadly HIV virus, the humble condom.

"Sometimes I really wonder if religion is the root of all evil."

Hey, don't blame religion. Religion is NOT the root of all evil. The self-professed holy men who deviate from the teaching of their religion and those who use religion as their political tools are the root of all evil. Examples abound in our country. You know who they are.

GOD only said ten sentences.

That ten sentences encompasses the whole gamut of life.

The rest are manmade & dressed in guise of religion!

Hence, Gautama Buddha, the historical buddha once said: "Religion is like a snake. Grasp the wrong end and you will get bitten."

The Caribbean is the 2nd most AIDS-affected region in the world after Sub-Saharan Africa with 300,000 people current living with HIV through out the region. In 2005, 30,000 people became infected with the disease and in the past year more than 20,000 people have died from AIDS-related diseases.

Trinidad and Tobago have an epidemic with a 2% prevalence rate ie it is estimated that 2% of its adults have been infected. Shortsighted policies like banning condom machines is not going to reduce that number. It will almost invariably do the opposite.

God should had added an 11th Commandment on the tablets HE gave to Moses:
"THOU SHALT NOT PLAY POLITICS WITH RELIGION"

As someone said at the forum, paraphrasing Steven Weinberg:

"With or without religion, good men will continue good things, and bad men will continue doing bad things; but to make a good man do bad things, it takes religion."

This is less an indictment of religion per se as it is the purveyors of religion. We need to remember that the 'holy men' are after all, human, and are subject to human foibles and vices. The real danger is that the people all too often surrender their free will, critical thinking and self-determination to religion, and thus allow themselves to be manipulated by the purveyors of religion. Most of the worst atrocities of history have been perpetrated in the name of religion.

I saw this sign on a church in KL: "WILLpower: Surrender your will to God, and God will give you the power."

I shudder to think what is happening within those walls.
