Headmasters To Be Sacked If Canteens Are Unclean

Headmasters will be sacked if they fail to ensure school canteens are run efficiently to prevent food poisoning among students, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Hon Choon Kim said today.

“I am serious. Help me to ensure this will not happen again or you will be sacked,” he told reporters after the school health supervisors meeting.

He said everyone right from the district education office, school headmasters and canteen operators would be held responsible for food poisoning cases.

“I want to send a clear message to everybody. Enough is enough. I don’t want to hear any more cases relating to food poisoning at school canteens,” he said.

Hon said he was taking the harsh action as food poisoning cases keep recurring as if nobody cared for the health of students.

***** Such stern warnings look nice on paper but does the education ministry have the political will and courage to carry out the threat? In any case I would be more comfortable if the education minister himself were to issue the warning. Then he would be bound by what he says, thus preventing the smart minister from turning tail at a later stage. After all who appoints the canteen contractors and on what basis have they been selected? How many of them have Umno membership and connections? What about irregular, unfair and lopsided measures used to select school headmasters? Would the sacking of incompetent school heads and district education office nitwits not expose the absurd yardsticks employed in appointing them in the first place? How much political goodwill that Umno would stand to lose will be uppermost in the mind of these pemimpin than the welfare or good health of students.

The education ministry has its quota of opportunists and cowards who cannot be depended on to promote education. They promote only themselves and their selfish interests.
