How True Is This Statement By DPM Najib?

Country's Law Does Not Shield Wrongdoers, Says Najib. (Bernama Headline)

The country's law does not shield wrongdoers and whoever breaks the law will not escape punishment, no matter what influence they use to secure their release, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said. The deputy prime minister said a criminal was still a criminal and the law would not let him escape punishment even if he used the influence of certain people.

He told reporters this when asked to comment on a news report Saturday that a high-ranking politician had allegedly received at least RM5 million to assist in the release of several men detained under the Emergency Ordinance.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Musa Hassan in confirming the matter, was reported to have said that the suspects linked to the politician were believed to be involved in crimes like vice, prostitution, gangsterism, illegal money lending and extortion.

Najib called on the police to take appropriate action against any party involved in the matter even if the individual was a politician or an influential figure. "I hope that the police will investigate and take action against those who try to do such things...action can be taken against them, no one is above the law in our country," he said.

***** Although I'm very glad that the DPM came out with this assurance, I hope that it does not only refer to the politician who pocketed RM5 million but also to political leaders implicated in other matters as well. After all, the likes of Zakaria Mad Deros and 'close-one-eye' Jasin MP are still walking around freely and unfettered without any visible action taken. And these are actually small fries. What about the really, really big ikan yu? Are they above the law?

This is a laughable statement.

There are multiple levels of political filters which impact how far a case gets in the police and judicial system.

a) How much resources are assigned and how far police pursue a case. Assigning just 1 already overloaded detective to an investigation is an effective way to bury the case.

b) Even if a completed investigation shows a strong case - whether the police refer it to the DPP's office.

c) Whether DPP actually proceeds with a charge.

d) If a charge is made and a trial commences. In high profile cases even judges can be interfered with.

Often the interference is quite subtle. But the officers involved know well if they don't toe the line, there will be repurcussions to their career. So those who don't have a strong sense of integrity will just go along with the politicians.

Raja of Pandamaran Zakaria Mat Deros appears to be above the law. And so are a lot of other state and district exco members who built mansions without obtaining planning approval, the building cost of which would be beyond their means if they had relied just on savings from their salaries.
