Astro Cannot Charge Subscribers For Decoder Repair, Says Keng Yaik.

Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said it is inappropriate for the Astro pay television station to charge subscribers for fixing reception problems following the use of its new satellite.

He said the subscribers should be duly notified if it intended to do so.

"Charging subscribers without duly notifying them is wrong and I want Astro subscribers who have been made to pay for it to lodge their complaints with the Malaysia Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)," he told reporters at a function in Kampung Baru Beruas here last night.

Dr Lim said this when asked on complaints by Astro subscribers in a newspaper over the station's action in charging them RM50 for service to reconnect transmission.

They had complained of poor reception after Astro switched to the new Measat-3 satellite and of being charged RM50 when the station sent its representatives to update the decoder. "This is a situation which leaves the subscribers with no choice," Dr Lim said, adding that he would get MCMC to look into the matter.

Astro has changed its channels to the new Measat-3 satellite since Feb 2. The station had previously informed its subscribers to ensure that their decoders were in stand-by mode when not tuned to Astro channels to facilitate updating of the decoders to receive transmission from Measat-3. (Bernama)

****** So if you too have been ripped off by these greed mongers at Astro, please make sure you lodge a complaint against them. That's the only way to have at least a little control over these huge monopolies.

MEASAT CORPORATION OR ASTRO SHOULD
DISCOUNT ALL SUBSCRIBERS DURING THE RAINY MONTHS AS WE CANNOT VIEW
THEIR CHANNELS DUE TO NON RECEPTION
CAUSED BY ADVERSE WEATHER.
THEIR RECEPTION SYSTEM IS NOT
PERFECT AND NO CHANNELS CAN BE VIEWED WHEN IT RAINS.
AS WE ARE PAYING FOR A SERVICE,WE
SHOULD BE COMPENSATED WHEN THE
SUPPLIER FAILS TO PROVIDE SUCH
SERVICE
