Donations For Flood Victims Must Be Channelled Via National Disaster Fund. Oh Dear!!
All donations for flood victims raised by the media must be channelled to the National Disaster Trust Fund for disbursement, Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin said Thursday. He said the decision was made at yesterday's weekly Cabinet meeting.
Now that is really bad news if you get my drift. We still have not been given the complete accounts for the 1998 Commonwealth Games! There is also great doubt about the final destination of the Tsunami donations. What actually happened to the funds from the telethon that was held more than 15 years ago to collect money for poor patients suffering heart ailments is still a mystery. From that time till now generous Malaysians have given probably hundreds of millions, perhaps billions in donations and to whom, how and where, pray tell, has all that money been 'chanelled' to or 'parked?' What percentage of that money has been eaten up by 'administrative work?' Ask these questions and all you'll get is deafening silence.
Please read the full Bernama report here and cry - for the donors and the victims. As for the 'recipients', well........
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak wants media organisations to channel their collections to the trust fund, he said.
Zainuddin, who is also National Disaster Management and Relief Aid Committee deputy chairman was speaking to reporters after receiving donations from Umno for flood victims at the Aid Collection Centre for Flood Victims managed by RTM at the International Broadcasting Centre in Angkasapuri.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad handed RM100,000 worth of clothing, food, beverages, stationery and school bags.
Zainuddin said the centre would remain open despite the floods in the affected states had subsided in case other problems cropped up later. Since it was opened on Dec 26 last year, he said, the centre received contributions from the public, associations, non-governmental organisations, companies, corporate figures, government departments and the private sector. "As of yesterday, eight deliveries have been sent to several flood-hit areas in Kota Tinggi and Batu Pahat," he said.
He said the centre also received RM200,000 from the Perlis Baitulmal and RM2,000 from Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara Malaysia on Jan 25.
On claims of relief aid collected by RTM was not disbursed to Chinese evacuees, Zainuddin said subsequent aid would be extended to them.(!?@!)

I have often contributed to help the poor and distressed. But I HAVE NEVER made any of my contributions through the official channels I have done my charity on a personal basis. WHY?? Because I have good reason never to trust the official channels to properly utilise the funds contributed for charity.
I have never seen any funds for charity or for other good purposes accounted for publicly. No accounts have ever been published of how the money is utilised. It is not good enough to publish the accounts in the government gazzette. It should be published in the newspapers, the onLine media and other publications easily available to the public. For example I have never contributed to the warriors fund or any disaster fund. I will NOT contribute to the flood relief fund. Any contribution will be made on a private and personal basis. I will advise all my friend the same
Generally I echo prl's sentiments.
I don't trust any politician handling funds. If I had known how the funds are going to be handled, I would have donated elsewhere! And the politicians include the government.
Show us some accountability first!
I fully agree with you. It is better not to give cash or food to a starving man. I believe in giving him a fishing rod and teaching him how to catch fish. This way, he will learn to feed himself and his own family for life...
The pipeline of charity is very long. In between entry point and exit there are numerous holes. This is why I have never contibuted a cent to charity; but I contribute in other ways. (my time)
Yup. Same here. I never trust any of these guys anymore. From the big shot right down to the rela man on the street.... all trying to swindle money donated by the public.
We are not far from Indonesia and Philippines. Every one responsible dips his/her hand into the coffer. And they are the one who makes the loudest noise about religion and race!
