First Hindu Temple To Achieve ISO 9001:2000

The Klang Sri Sundararaja Perumal Temple is believed to be the first Hindu temple in Malaysia and probably the world to achieve the ISO 9001:2000 certification last November for its quality in religious, cultural, and social services to Hindus.

The temple administration worked on getting the certification for the past three years by enhancing its administrative needs which include assisting schools, orphanages, old folk's homes, charities and areas like religion, education, social and humanitarian development.

Temple president S.Anandakrishnan said that with the ISO award, temple religious activities would be standardised to set a precedent for other temples. "Other temples are not bound to follow our standard operating procedure (SOP), but we wanted to set a benchmark by achieving this award so that people will know we provide quality services in religious faith. "By standardising our religious procedure, devotees will get similar and fair treatment in terms of wedding ceremony and other rituals," he said in an exclusive interview with Bernama.

Anandakrishnan who is also an Assistant Registrar for Hindu weddings said the temple has become a popular centre for Hindu marriages and wedding feasts and the temple has established an additional hall to facilitate such functions. He added standard guidelines would be put into place involving things like booking of the wedding hall and the do's and don'ts for priests while conducting prayers. "By implementing this basic practice for each religious ceremony I feel everyone will get consistent output in terms of temple service," he said.

Meanwhile, temple honorary secretary P Maheswaren said they plan to set a standard rule where the temple committee meeting will take precedent over other newly formed committees to ensure the temple administration is run efficiently. He added contrary to popular belief, an ISO certification does not set objective standards for a product or service but emphasises observance of certain quality criteria in its administrative and management practices.

Other measures in the pipeline include placing suggestion boxes to get feedback from the devotees concerning temple activities.

Works Minister and MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu will officiate the ISO 9001: 2000 certification award ceremony this Wednesday. Representatives from The Malaysian Book of Records will present a certificate to mark the temple's achievement.

well anonymous, IF the temple breaks a planning rule or whatever rule of which demolition is the penalty, it will have to face the bulldozer dont you think?

we dont want the local authorities to be condenmed for not doing thier job do we? infact, so that we are ALWAYS CONSISTENT, WE MUST DEMAND THE DEMOLITION LIKE WE DEMAND DEMOLITION FOR OTHER CASES!

I had always thought that ISOs were only granted to business enterprises whose products meet the standards of excellence or the minimum standards demanded by the proferring body. Never in my wildest imagination would I ever have thought that temples, or churches or any place of worship would be deemed deserving of an ISO 9001:2000 certification. So what does that make the Klang Sundararaja Perumal Temple? The holier–than-thou or the crème de la creme of Hindu temples? The best Hindu temple in the land, if not the world? Is that the temple then that all persons of the Hindu faith should gravitate to above all else to hold their wedding, charitable and what-other functions? If all the faithful believe so then that temple is in for a lot of roaring business.
Will our churches or mosques be next in line for application for ISO certification? Will there be a competition among local councils to determine which is the most incorruptible one, setting the standard for ISO 9001:2000 for local councils? Sounds implausible? Maybe not so. But this is Malaysia, where anything that can set the cash registers ringing is BOLEH.

Outsider,

I am a hindu and I am a bit puzzled, too. Its a medium sized temple.

I don't think there is any kind of rating system.

Most probably the ISO will make the administration to be streamlined and make things easier for future administrators.

Neat way to sidestep a question posed to you. Perhaps you are afraid to displaying your ignorance in words. LOL.

outsider, instead of arguing with me , why dont you just take up my good advice and go to an ISO site. You will then understand what ISO is and later on realise what you said earlier (and thus my comment on it), was wrong.

I know what ISO is, I asked you to go to a site so that you dont have any doubt about what you read.If I explain it you, you may not want to believe me!

Why is it that some people ignore a valid and a good advice? LOL

Get married at that temple. Then you can boast that you had a IOS9001/2000 wedding and the thali you put around your gal's neck is IOS 9001/2000 certified. Then put an advertisement in the newspapers announcing your ISO 9001/2000 certified marriage. LOL.

You may not believe it, but even temples like the Klang Sri Sundararaja Perumal Temple can actually receive an ISO certification as well. The admin of the temple really worked hard in achieving it and with that, they are hereby recognized with this international quality service acknowledgement.
