More Confusion At KL Hospital Morgue Over Rights To Body.
Chaos hit the Kuala Lumpur Hospital's morgue as two parties were adamant that they had the sole right to the body of one Rayappan Anthony, 71, who died at the hospital Wednesday.
Rayappan's family members claimed that he was a Christian while the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) said that he was a Muslim. Hence, the dispute.
The argument had been going on at the morgue's compound since Wednesday.
A.Sivanesan, lawyer to Rayappan's family members, said Rayappan, from Section 19, Shah Alam, embraced Islam on Jan 20 1990 when he married an Indian Muslim woman under his Muslim name, Muhammad Rayappan Abdullah.
"But after about eight years of being a Muslim, Rayappan decided to return to his family and applied to renounce the faith," he told reporters at the morgue's compound Thursday.
Sivanesan said Rayappan had made a sworn declaration before a Commissioner for Oaths to renounce Islam but did not submit the letter to Jais until his death Wednesday.
He said Rayappan applied to the National Registration Department (NRD) on May 10 1999 to change the particulars in his identity card by submitting his sworn declaration and the department had issued a new MyKad to him under the name of Rayappan Anthony.
Sivanesan said he discussed the matter with the Jais officials Thursday morning and submitted all the legal documents from the NRD to them, and the matter would be taken to the Syariah Court Friday.
Meanwhile, Rayappan's daughter, Jayamarie, 42, said her father had stopped living as a Muslim when he returned to his Christian family in 1999.
"We hope we can claim the body amicably and our lawyer has given all the documents to Jais," she said.
Jais refused to comment when contacted. (BERNAMA)
***** As always such matters bring up unnecessary bad feelings all-round. Converts to Islam must understand that 're-converting' or apostasy is something that is serious and cannot be easily invoked without repercussions. That is the situation in the present case and hopefully some amicable end is in sight.

I do wonder what will be the outcome of this trial and the impact it's going to make...
As said, it is not an easy decision to convert..
Before converting ,all considerations must be weighed properly. The impact on our family and loved ones, the impact on our social lives, the cause of our conversion and much more..Most importantly are we converting for the pure reason that, we believe fully in the religion we want to convert or are we converting for people satisfying reasons such as marriage conversion, buisness opportunity and much more..
If we are converting for others satisfaction ,we are surely trading in deep water..Only if we really believe that the conversion decision comes from our own mind then only ,we can be committed truly to the new religion converted..The thing is do not convert if we do not believe in something 110%..Cause that decision will change our live and others tremendously...
The Islamic religious dept is quick to want to take the deceased's body away even if they are said to have left Islam.
The question is , is the religious dept going to hold prayers at these people's grave on Hari Raya enam ? Or is it just to dig a hole, put the body there and forget about it? If none of those from the religious dept is going to hold prayers for the soul of these bodies that they have "snatched" then what is the use?. I would be downright irresponsible.
Are they also guaranteeing that these souls whose body they have snatched will go to the muslim syurga?
There are hundreds upon hundreds of unclaimed bodies in Darfur, Somalia, Congo and more recently, the area around Mt Mayon in Luzon due to Typhoon Durian...why doesn't the 'religious' dept go and collect them for burial here?
The people there would be most grateful to Abdullah and his 'caring' administration.
I don't see why a person's personal decision about his/her faith becomes the Authorities decision. They are not GOD to judge anyone who decides to choose or leave a religion.
They have been given too much face. They shall never be given respect but hated most as these type of events keep occuring, creating the constraint between the muslims and non-muslims anywhere in the world.
Is a religion of love to force one into faith that one does not require? It is FORCE not ACCEPTANCE or they call it SUBMISSION. As in their teachings, they are taught not to use force. They use force, then psychologically claim it is protection to their faith. So, we are stupid or are we supposed to be pretending dumb?
I don't see any benefit to the dead as the soul has already gone and the flesh, rotting, only needs some place to rot. So if they want the flesh, let them have it. No one can snatch its soul away. Not anyone except God himself. So, why do we worry so much. Believe me, as long as you pray for the soul, their soul is ever searching for their destiny, not people deciding the destiny of that particular soul!
I wonder when they are ever gonna understand this simple logic.
