Bernard Dompok's Question To Public Service Commission. Truthful Answers Required.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Bernard Dompok wants an explanation from the Public Service Commission on the low percentage of Sabah and Sarawak Bumiputeras in the civil service.

"We had discussed the matter at a meeting with the Management Integrity Committee. I will meet the PSC beginning of next year and want to know why this is so.

"I want them to come out with some sort of verification and findings pertaining to this problem," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here Monday.

Citing statistics, he said of the 18,858 applications from the Ibans, only 24 were accepted while only one out of the 617 Orang Asli who had applied was accepted.

Earlier, in response to a question by Lee Chee Keong in the Dewan Negara, Dompok said race was not a factor used by the PSC in the selection of candidates to be called for interviews.

Lee had asked about the effectiveness of efforts by the PSC to woo the non-Bumiputeras for employment in the civil service.

Dompok said PSC was transparent in the selection and appointment of employees in the civil service although there was an imbalance in the races.

"This happens because there are fewer non-Bumiputeras, especially the Chinese and Indians, to join the civil service," he added.

****** It is about time the government came clean and admitted that either they have been stacking the civil service with Malays as vote banks and to carry out its 'Malaycentric' matlamat or it is merely a 'coincidence' that Malays are employed in ridiculously disproportionate numbers. For too long has this question been left hanging and now is good a time as any for some truthful answers. Remember, anything other than the complete truth is not acceptable.

***** Update to the above: Why there are few non-Malays in civil service, Nazri Aziz explains.

NON-Malays prefer to be their own boss unlike the Malays who don’t mind taking a lower-paying job with the civil service.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said this was among reasons behind why there were not many non-Malays in the civil service.

For the Malays, he said, it was also a cultural thing to work for the Government.

"It is cultural for Malays to work in the civil service but with the non-Malays, for instance the Chinese, they prefer to get their hands dirty and become their own taukeh (boss)," he said.

Nazri also said that it was wrong to say that the non-Malays gave the civil service sector a pass just because they felt that the Government only employed Malays.

"To me, it is not a problem of perception but more of the non-Malays avoiding the civil service as it offered low-paying jobs," he said to a supplementary question by Datuk Lim Bee Kau (BN-Padang Serai).

****** Non-Malays avoiding the civil service? But for heaven's sake why?

Haha...If the Malay has no interest in becoming bosses, then why the government still instists on (30%)free lunch? If he thinks Chinese bosses are 'dirty'(?), stop harrassing the chinese for non-halal tax.

If the non-Malay bumi are not given the civil service opportunities, do u think non-bumi has any chance?

Who avoid job opportunities? Definitely not the non-Malays.

Wtf is he talking about? The civil service is no more a "low paying" job. It is guaranteed for life unless the government goes bankrupt. You have steady increament, various perks & allowance, bonus, many holidays, shorter working hours & five-day weeks, low interest loans etc... The life in the private sector is much tougher. Average ordinary Malaysian would definitely prefer the civil service jobs. But, too bad, the government/BN UMNO prefers Malays especially their cronies. With the huge nos of applicants, even Malays without connection or cronies in the civil service dept find it not easy to succeed in their job interview.
Don't believe, ask some of your Malay friends whether it's easier to secure government job thro' crony recommendation & connections.

To your question: "Non-Malays avoiding the civil service? But for heaven's sake why?" 'Cos the civil service avoided the non-Malays by deliberatly failing them during interviews when they applied for the posts in question.
Go ask them who failed the teacher traing or nursing interviews.
