Ministry Looking For New Candidate For Finas DG Post

The Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry is looking at candidates with a film industry background to fill the post of director-general of the National Film Development Corporation (Finas). Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim told reporters last night that the ministry wanted a candidate with experience in the arts and film world so that he could lead Finas well.

The post fell vacant after the previous director-general, Fauzi Ayob, reportedly to be disappointed with the management of the film industry in the country, resigned in May after only six months in the post. He had claimed that there was too much interference from senior ministry officials in the running and management of Finas, making it difficult for him to make plans and decisions to chart the direction of the national film agency.

Earlier, in his speech when opening the national-level Integrity Management Committee meeting, Rais said he would continue to make the courtesy campaign the ministry's main agenda to ensure that the courtesy culture was not lost among Malaysians. He said other countries like Singapore had long launched the courtesy campaign as a way of life and the ministry would emulate them.

**** What is the point of looking for qualified candidates if they cannot put their experience and qualification to use? If the all-knowing senior officials in the ministry constantly interfere and prevent the DG from carrying out his duties then it is a total waste of time to have such a post, let alone search for a capable candidate. The trouble with everything that remotely involves the government is petty politics. That culture has to be eradicated before we can aspire for excellence or expect talented people to make a difference.

Back in May, I had posted a tongue-in-cheek suggestion that Akmal Abdullah should be nominated as the FINAS DG, since he seems to be Mr. Know-it-All when it comes to what's good and what's not for the "Malaysian" film industry (from his limited chauvinistic point of view, of course).

This would be a golden opportunity to put the money where his mouth is... and probably kill off the industry once and for all.

I do hope no one took the suggestion seriously... LOL!

I read your earlier post and I hope, for whatever remains of our film industry's future, that this man doesn't even see the main door at Finas.

Around mid to late May, I did notice an advert in a local english daily. Finas advertised looking for a DG. There were specific general requirements. What attracted my attention was, all applications were to be sent to "The DG, Finas, c/o HR unit of Finas".

It appeared ridiculous to me for a HR unit or an outgoing DG to accept applications for the CEO post of a department or organisation.
