Probe On School Activities That Hamper Studies

Only yesterday I had posted on the subject of schools forcing students to collect donations and sure enough, highlighted today is an extreme case of this practice.

A school in Taman Tun Dr Ismail had asked students to assist in collecting donations for organising a dinner at the Putra World Trade Centre at the end of this month and is selling tables at between RM1,000 and RM10,000 per table! The matter had come to light when a concerned parent had publicly raised the issue of this donation drive, claiming that it had affected the studies of the pupils.

This brought a clarification from the Minister of Education himself who said that it was normal for schools to collect donations as long as it did not affect the students' studies. He dismissed the reason for the school to collect donations as being the lack of funds from the ministry, adding that it had sufficient funds to distribute among schools.

Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein Tuesday said he had directed the Inspector of Schools and the Federal Territory Education Department to investigate the allegation. The investigation was necessary to overcome the parents' anxiety.

To me the rationale behind this 'mega' donation drive is simple. It is probably part of a grand design of the principal of this school to ensure his or her place in the school's history. Remember that Taman Tun Dr Ismail is where the Tuans and the orang kaya reside. Therefore extorting high amounts as donations may more often than not, go unnoticed. Its just the principal's bad luck that some 'lousy' parent decided to squeal this time. I'm sure that the wealthy PIBG/PTA of the school must have been equally distraught at the 'unbecoming' behaviour of this wayward parent who thinks only of the child and not the 'future' of the beloved school. Poor Datuks and Datins, so much effort and only a bad name at the end because of one scoundrel of a parent.

I have some suggestions to overcome this mess. Firstly continue with the lavish banquet but channel the income derived to some poor sekolah kebangsaan in the outskirts. Secondly rope in the benefactors in the PIBG/PTA and harness their talent in amassing easy wealth to other projects not involving school children. And finally capitalize on the ingenuity and leadership skills of the principal by transferring this enterprising person to some remote yet deserving school in Batang Kali, Janda Baik or some such place.

Some better suggestions anyone?
