"Umno Leaders' Arrogance Among Reasons For BN's Loss," Says Mat Taib. Racism & Corruption Too
Feeling comfortable and arrogance by some Umno leaders after Barisan Nasional's (BN) resounding victory in the 2004 general election sent the wrong message to the other races.
These were among reasons for the BN to lose votes to the Opposition in last month's general election, according to Umno information chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib.
"Knowingly or unknowingly, some of the decisions made by Umno leaders had hurt the feelings of other races, especially the Chinese and Indians, in Peninsular Malaysia.
"Some of our Umno leaders, whenever they speak, focus only on issues pertaining to the Malays, tenders for the Malays and brandishing the kris (Malay dagger). When the other races see this, they get scared. To them, we appear as arrogant," he said when speaking at an information and dialogue session with Petaling Jaya Selatan Umno division members here last night.
Muhammad said when a sensitive issue was politicised, it created uneasiness in inter-racial relations, making other races to easily sway to the Opposition, which is seen to be more liberal in their inter-racial relations despite having a vague agenda.
"The situation is compounded when the Malays themselves did not lend their full support to the BN, particularly in Malay-majority seats," said the Rural and Regional Development Minister.
He said Umno leaders must re-examine their political approach and be more sensitive to issues which could create racial tension.
"Although Malaysia can be regarded as a Malay-majority nation, Umno leaders had no right to talk and act according to their whims and fancy, without taking the feelings and interests of the other races into consideration," added Muhammad, who is also Selangor Umno and BN chief. (Bernama)
***** So it took a devastating loss in the general elections to drum some sense into at least a few umnoputeras that what they have been doing all this while is utterly contemptible, racist and not in consonance with the claims of administering a genuine democracy.
Whether they can actually change their ways is debatable and I don't think that a majority of the citizens are willing to give them another chance anytime soon. Let's stick to Pakatan Rakyat so that we may relish living in a truly democratic nation enjoying real inter-ethnic harmony instead of the fraudulent hype that was propagated by Umno.

Its good to see a sr umno guy talking sense, esp on the feelings of the chinese n indians, after a decade. Excellent, while we say keep it up, can the HINDRAF 5 be released now b4 the indians feel more hurt n Muhamad should take the lead to abolish the ISA. Make a differance Tan Sri. Indians would forever remember you for taking the lead.
Don't be fooled by M2M and the other Leopards on a Charm offensive. It because they are right now staring at the prospect of losing even more after the General Elections......
The leopard is just trying to hide its spots. We've had 50 years of this nonsense - its not going to change overnight.
kittykat45 is perfectly correct, correct, correct. The UMNOPUTRAS have now lost the control of the masses and the route to richness and ill gotten wealth. If you had seen the movie "EXORCIST' - you would have heard that the Devil can talk in many ways and as many persons to lead you astray.
We are dealing with hardened politicians and we are just chicken in front of their politicking. Let them believe that we are listening to them and if they give money to vote for them - take the money - and use it for the 'other' side.
The whole lot must go. The country has no other choice because even one bad apple in the crowd is good enough to spoil all the new rest of the budding politicians.
Anyway. The Last Word. DO NOT TRUST A POLITICIAN. Deal with himor her with care from a distance.
They have not changed, they will not change & basically they to do not want to change!
At the moment, they are worried that they will lose whatever little power they have, so they will chaet, lie, & do anything to cover up what they really are.
For them to say such statements and admit their mistakes at this time after all they did? I dont buy it! Unless they apologize.. and repent! But I dont think they will. Bad habits die hard.
Malaysia as a country will never move on and get any respect from other countries especially from the Western world whenever racism and corruption takes place in the leadership.
This is one reason and one reason alone i upped and left for a much better life abroad where fairness is priority.
kitty's right, its a charm offensive.
