"Boycott Dutch Products," Dr Mahathir Urges Muslims Worldwide
Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad called upon Muslims worldwide to boycott Dutch products in protest of a film released Monday on the Internet which criticised Islam's holy book, the Quran.He said such a boycott could result in The Netherlands having to "close shop", as Muslims made up the wealthiest portion of the world's population and were also the biggest importers.
However, in order to be effective, all 1.3 billion Muslims in the world must unite in the boycott and put the interest of Islam and Muslims over that of individual needs.
"We must not be afraid of losing trade with them. If we do, then we won't be thinking as Muslims, but more for our own self interests," he told reporters after opening the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation's (Perkim) 46th annual general meeting at a hotel here, today. Dr Mahathir was referring to Fitna, a 15-minute film posted on a website on Thursday that highly criticised Islam, setting verses of the Quran against a background of violent images from terrorist attacks.
Dutch legislator Geert Wilders created the film, which also shows statements from radical clerics and cited verses from the Quran interspersed with images of the Sept 11 attack on the United States, the 2004 commuter train bombings in Spain and the murder later that year of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh on an Amsterdam street.
Earlier, Dr Mahathir had said the film was a result of misconceptions about Islam and there was also a "critical motive behind it". "They will continue to do this until we show to them Islam is a good religion, that we are not violent people, that we don't tell lies to people..but this must be shown in practice by the Muslim community," he said.
On the home front, Dr Mahathir who is also Perkim president, said it was very important for Perkim to give the right impression of Islam to Muslims and non-Muslims alike so that there would be no misunderstanding on the religion, which could lead to fear, suspicion or hostility against Islam. What he said seems logical enough. Boycott the Dutch Products...sure. However, note that he said that Muslims should not act violently. Can those extremesits who blow up themselves (no big loss!) & innocent people please take note.
He also said on the home front that they should show the Non-Muslims that they (the Non-Muslims) do not have anything to fear. Can our Islamic Department or whoever is in-charge take note please before "snatching" bodies!
Yeah, the bulk of Malaysia's exports to Europe - worth multi-billions of $$$$$ per year, and many thousands of Malaysian jobs -
is shipped through Rotterdam - the busiest container port in Europe.

Dr M is being a publicist for the film by asking for a boycott.
Whatever he says or whatever is done will never wash away evil deeds. Two wrongs will never make a right. A protest on behalf of a guilty party will never wash away a crime or change anybody's perception, merely highlight the crimes and inhumanity.
He has no sense in how to act properly or effectively.

This boycott thing is rubbish.This is just one man's view and interprtation of Islam and you have the extremist to thank for that. I don't think Dr.M understand the impact of such a boycott if it was a reality...it will probably hurt the Malaysian more then anyone else. You have major multinationals operating in Malaysia..and many Malaysian livelihood depend on this. Further in this age of globalisation how do you draw the line between what is Dutch and not Dutch?
This boycott is stupid. I said the same about the Muhammad cartoons and I am saying it now. They actually have something called the freedom of expression in Holland? If the Dutch are angry with this politician, isn't it their job to vote him out or boycott the movie?

Din't tdm also threatened the Jews (and Americans) once or twice in his career? Did they boycott Malaysian products then? The Americans were displeased initially but they still continued the palm oil imports and all that. Why can't Malaysia deal with it in a more mature way such as through OIC, EU, or through the Dutch ambassador etc? Calling for a product boycott is really stupid because you don't hit the movie maker at all but instead giving him the notoriety and publicity for his film.
Also, I am pretty sure Dutch Lady is not solely a dutch company anymore, they are probably produced in other countries with local partners. It is probably the same in Malaysia. Wouldn't it just hurt the local partners?

The film by Wilders is TRUTH and the sunlight of truth hurts and scares the evil despot Mahathir. He should be tried in a court, then thrown into the dirtiest cell to live out his last days, the swine.

This old man never practices what he preaches, and is super thick-skinned about his blunders. You can trace almost every ill in this country in the last 30 years to him and his policies.
Since he said Islam is a good religion, then FOR ISLAM"S sake, instead of boycotting, just show the world that people who practise this religion can be matured and reasonable instead of boycotting or raising hell just because one bigotted man did a video. It has nothing to do with the Dutch govermnent, and the old man, so used to his "Do as I say or else!" attitude can never understand freedom of speech and our basic human right to discern for ourselves what is right or wrong. He thinks every body is a moron and only he knows everything. This man is so crafty--look at what he did to Razaleigh, Musa, Anwar, the judiciary, anyone he feels could hinder his power.
This is a chance for Muslims around the world to show they are intelligent and reasonable people who will not succumb to calls for violence and further damage to Islam as people like Mahathir is trying to promote.
I am very surprised, and I have better respect for the muslims for the lack of violence so far in reaction to this video which I have not seen. Do not fall into the trap of over-reacting and causing the world to think what the video says you are. Be the true follower of your religion if it really promotes peace.
There are ways to show the unhappiness of a Muslim towards the film. The most important part is the action. I salute Mydin for labeling all the Dutch product so the customers can decide.

Well USA and Israel are not making videos against Islam. This recent dutch attack is a straight forward one and should be stopped. What happened to democracy and respect.
USA and Israel attacks the countries they think are a threat to them etc...that Bush many times apologised and referred to Islam as a peaceful religion not to mention his close business with the Saudis.

Malaysian should do boycott for price reducing.. Not for this.. Such as petrol, foods and more..
Unfortunately, trade with US represent a large portions of Malaysian foreign trade. Not that Dr Mahathir never tried to break away from this trend,it's just there's no takers. He suggested an EAEC, but Japan sabotage the attempt and it fails. Then a Gold Dinar in order to somewhat unified the muslim economy and break free from the clutchs of dolar, this has yet to be succesful. Muslim leaders, especially the Arabs are just too damned cowards.
