British Hindus Liken Malaysian Government To Taliban
British Hindus are to hold a silent protest outside the office of the British premier this week to highlight the "new lite-Taliban" policies of the Malaysian government, an umbrella group for Hindus said Tuesday.
The Hindu Council UK (HCUK) said Hindus would present a petition to Prime Minister Gordon Brown Friday to protest the condition of Malaysian Hindus, "who number two million and are suffering religious persecution" by the government in Kuala Lumpur.
It said Hindu temples have been razed and damaged in Malaysia, "irrespective of their age" but added that the silent protest was against human rights violations of not only Hindus but also other religious minorities of Malaysia.
The issue hit the headlines in November last year when Malaysian police used violence to break up a march by Hindus in the capital Kuala Lumpur and arrested 31 protesters, five of whom, HCUK said, were still in detention.
The police action was criticised around the world.
Last month, members of the British parliament demanded that the Malaysian government scrap plans to demolish Hindu temples and to allow legitimate protests against it.
In a strongly worded statement, they also urged the British government to take up the matter on their behalf and "make the strongest possible representation" to Kuala Lumpur.
HCUK general secretary Anil Bhanot, in a statement Friday, likened the Malaysian government's attitude to that of "the Taliban ideology which destroyed the Bamiyan Buddhas (in Afghanistan)," and said it needed to be "challenged for re-education."
"We appeal to world communities to help stop the lite-talibanisation of the Malaysia government through trade and other means," Bhanot added. (IANS)

The cry about marginalisation is all about the INDIANS and not the Hindus.
Hence British Hindus should be careful in how they address a matter which affects a SECULAR Nation like Malaysia.
Just because 'persons' who may be here today and gone tomorrow make all sorts of statements to satisfy their political needs it need not necessarily mean that the spirit of the Malaysian Constitution has changed despite the fact that one earlier Government surreptitiously amended the Constitution with a few words attempting to make 'inferior' courts equivalent to High Courts and, it did so, after jailing the Opposition Parliament members so that they could not object to the massive cheating of the masses by those in power at that time. Today Malaysia suffers because of that surreptitous move.
Malaysia dioes NOT have a culture and Civic Consciousnes where Bills proposed to be placed before Parliament are first brought to the attention of the Public and Civil Society for their views and suggestions. Laws are just drawn up hither and thither and passed by a few ignorant Parliamentarians in order to ensure that they are not faulted by the doctrine called 'the WHIP' and further eliminated from the gravy train.
It is the Indian Diaspora which may want to empathise with their fellow Indians in other countries but the Religion should not be dragged into the issue as those who are being marginalised include Indian Muslims; Sikhs; Jains; and such like.
However, the UK Indians should not press the British Government but take up the issue with INDIA for failing to have addressed the needs of its children in the far flung Nations of the World. India accaepts with glee all the monies that are repatriated by the NRIs to India but slinks away when the very same people are placed in positions like those faced by the Fijian and Malaysian Indians.
So long as religion is used as a weapon in politics it will only create more confusion. Religion should be left to each individual soul to deal with in the manner he cares to deal with it. Man should not be subject to all sorts of religious edicts of so called self appointed religious Divine Representatives and be made fools by these so called Leaders of Religion. There is no single human being on this Earth who can safely interpret religion from whatever source it may be.
hey,
would this b the next 'agenda' of the taliban government??

Of course the allegation is not true at all. Yes there might be some problems here and there, but accusing the Malaysian goverment running the country Taliban-like is well off target. We all know that if there are any worshipping places that have to be destroyed, not just Hindu's but others including Muslim's as well, it only has something to do with violation of land rights, more of location, planning issues etc rather than an attempt to block any religious activities. In ratio of followers, the Hindus in Malaysia has the highest no. of temple than any other religions including Islam. How can the govt be accused running Taliban style?
