PM To Announce Cabinet Decision On Royal Commission - Nazri. But Will It Be Another Sandiwara?
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will announce Wednesday's Cabinet decision on the setting up of the Royal Commission to inquire into a controversial video clip featuring a senior lawyer purportedly brokering judges' appointments.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz confirmed the Cabinet discussed the matter at its weekly meeting today.
"The Prime Minister will announce everything. We discussed (about the Royal Commission), that's it. The Prime Minister will announce the outcome," he told reporters in Parliament.
Nazri, who was bombarded with questions on the commission's members and its terms of reference, declined comment.
He merely said: "We'll leave that to the PM."
***** So the Cabinet discussed the matter. Loudmouth Nazri apparently has been ordered to zip it till Pak Lah reveals the nature of the discussion.
What could have been the outcome of their deliberation? Four main alternatives really. One is to bury the whole issue and say that there is no need for a royal commission. Of course this may not be a very wise move especially with elections not too far off. Another plausible decision could be the setting up of an inquiry with restricted terms of reference. Thirdly there could be a commission with broad terms of reference but stacked with pliable members.
And finally, wonder of wonders, the PM would actually announce the forming of a totally unencumbered royal commission comprising a chairman and members with above board reputations and proven expertise! Alas I may be asking for too much from a government more accustomed to sweeping inconvenient matters under the carpet.
