Is Our Angkasawan A Scientist Too?

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha is not only an astronaut but is also entitled to be called a scientist, a Malaysian scientist said Tuesday.

"He (Dr Sheikh Muszaphar) is called an astronaut because he has travelled into outer space but we must not forget that he is also a scientist because he is trained to conduct scientific research in space," said Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Zaharudin Idrus, former science advisor to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

"Although Dr Sheikh Muszaphar is an orthopaedic surgeon, his knowledge as a scientist is beyond question," he told reporters here today.

Dr Ahmad Zaharudin, who was also science advisor to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was confident that Dr Sheikh Muszaphar would not encounter any problems in carrying out his tasks -- conducting research into the crystallisation of protein and microbes or bacteria during his stay at the International Space Station (ISS).

Dr Ahmad Zaharudin, who is now the chairman of Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation Sdn Bhd, said Dr Sheikh Muszaphar would continue to conduct research once he is back on Earth.

He said that the data to be collected by Dr Sheikh Muszaphar from the experiments aboard the ISS was very important to research work carried out at six local universities including Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

They (experiments) were to explore new scientific frontiers and could be used as reference by other scientists, he said, adding that Malaysians should be proud that local scientists were at par with their foreign counterparts.

However, he hoped that Malaysian scientists would communicate more with those outside Malaysia by publishing their work in foreign journals.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, 35, blasted off into outer space on board a Soyuz TMA-11 spacecraft on Oct 10 together with American astronaut Peggy Whitson and Russian aerospace engineer Yuri Malenchenko from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

In doing so, he created history by becoming the first Malaysian to go into space.

The Soyuz TMA-11 docked with the ISS on Friday. Dr Sheikh Muszaphar is due to return to Earth on October 21. (Bernama)

***** It's all a little confusing though. The Americans consider him a space flight participant. The Russians say that he's a cosmonaut. And now we are asked to believe that he's a scientist exploring
new scientific frontiers. Great!

Hmm.............even spinning "gasing" by 'bolehnut' in space also considered scientific research.......that is interesting........

Our school students are also not only students but are scientists. They, like Doc Mus, also know how to spin tops

just a squatter

every thinking person knows that an astronout is not born overnight and a orthopediac surgeon cannot be put on the same pedestastal as a .. as a scientist...

this is just propaganda to build the self esteemof one particular race...the blind leading th blind...

American use "Astronout"
Russian use "Cosmonout"
Malaysian use 'Angkasawan'

Russian called American Astronout when they use Rssian space craft.

Malaysian (S.Muszaphar) was trained by Russian, and Russian can call him cosmonout.

American dont train Sheikh Muszaphar, so they dont call him Astronout. Maybe they dont know that Russian trained him to be 'cosmonout'.

Who care about what American call our 'Angkasawan' as astronout or not?

OK. Confusing but I guess spinning the gasing IN SPACE is a scientific research...right. Ok.

But I have to go super bimbotic here and state that he is hot. Our ahh....astronout? cosmonout? angkasawan? Well that dude that is in space now.

Looks like the controversy over the "space-flight participant" thing made quite an impression on the authorities.

All this is spinning is how to prevent a repeat of the label.

Aiyah..NASA has had passengers on their space shuttle, too. A teacher holding lessons from space. Senator John Glenn...ex-astronaut and their strongest funding supporter in Congress.

Yes, Dr Sheikh should come back and crystallize our Cabinet Ministers' brain cells so that they can be wiser and truly lead this nation. What bullshit?

More spin on the failed previous spin about the paid passenger space tourist, being a qualified cosmonaut. The spinning of the top is a real scientific achievement, ask any 6 year old.
The Malaysian people are not fools, they don't believe all this convoluted rubbish.

Hmmmm. Can't we as a nation take pride in the fact that one of us went up there without all this labels?

Astronaut, Cosmonaut, Angkasawan or just a Space Traveller.. does it matter?

What is more important is what we do next? Will every purchase of weapon entitle us a trip? That's going to push up our weapon purchase cost. I am sure in between there will be some siphoning of fund, too. BN has to survive what?

Scientists are trained to do research at the foremost frontiers of science. Not anybody who does some experiments are scientists. Students who do experiments are not scientists. likewise some laymen can also do experiments but are not scientists. We do not know if our angkasawan will discover anything new for the academic world of science. It is still too early to name him scientists yet.

Honestly, the kiasu syndrome of UMNO really knows no boundries. Our fella is a space tourist and we paid for his "holiday" package to space and back, period. What are all these "cosmonaut" and "scientist" thingies, I just don't understand. If we are able to build our space ship (without it being blow to smithereens upon blast off),land on planet Pluto, carry out soil sampling, test the atmosphere and the ability to repair our ship in space; and then return to good old mother Earth in one piece, then there is something for UMNO to crow about. As it is, their little minds are really working overtime to get themselves into a frenzy.

There are a lot of things in the field of space engineering that our fella would not know and has no experience in. Do you think for one moment, the Russians are going to allow him to tinker around in the space craft, thus jeapordising their return to Earth? So to keep himself busy (and I mean real busy), someone has to come out with the teh tarik, roti canai and top spinning ideas, and with it, blew our hard earned RM140m into nothingness.

To the Americans, Russians and Chinese, space indeed may be the final frontier but in UMNO, they need to explore their minds first before exploring the galaxy.

You know, I got this gut feeling that this spaceman is no different from beauty pageant contestants. When he finally gets his foot on the ground, he will be paraded across the country like a visiting "friendly Martian" with political patronage vis-a-vis relevant ministries. He will be the "top" instead, spinning his image except this top cannot spin forever under micro gravity. After which he will probably be sought after by big commercial advertisement concerns with big bucks. Any difference to beauty contests?

there are a lot of things he is NOT:

he is NOT an orthopaedic surgeon, bcos he hasn't passed his specialist exam;

he is NOT a scientist & NOT a researcher bcos he hasn't published any scientific research in any peer-reviewed journals;

the closest description for him is given by azmi sharom in his Star column on 18 Oct, ie. he is a spaceman - bcos he is just a man in space. period.

What's all this about naming the person in space. Isn't it good enough that dr.mus is the first malay muslim that have reached the iss. Instead of critisizing or whatever, why not we pray for him for his homecoming, to earth that is, safely.
