Muslims Please Take Note - Imported Turkey Not Halal.

If you thought that this was another one of those senseless fringe groups issuing silly announcements of the loony kind regarding 'a cross on cookies' and holy words on ice-cream cones or Bata shoes, think again. This advisory came from no less than the official, Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim).

Its Director-General, Datuk Mustafa Abdul Rahman announced that Muslims are advised not to consume imported turkey and turkey-based products meant for the Christmas and New Year celebrations as they were not halal. He clarified that the government had allowed the import of the products specially for the two occasions. "Consequently, all imported turkey products in the market from Nov 19 will be deemed non-halal," he said in a Press statement issued here Monday.

The department had also issued special guidelines for supermarkets and other outlets to follow in selling them to prevent confusion among Muslims. One of them is that all the products must have non-halal labels on them. (Bernama)

***** So all those of the faith kindly take note of the advisory and caution, lest you inadvertently purchase a turkey not born in the Tanah Air. Supermarkets are also hereby warned that apart from not openly displaying Christmas trees, a pokok that is alien to our tropical climate and may add to the increasing number of symbols, food products and edible birds which might confuse the lay follower, you are strictly to advice each and every purchaser on the national origin of the turkey being sold. In case of doubt as to the creed/persuasion of the potential purchaser, kindly insist on perusing the MyKad. You will, by this simple exercise of mindfulness, prevent potentially severe confusion among some muddled members of the faith.

Be warned any disregard or unconcern displayed by you will lead to severe repercussions.

An interesting read: Halal? Halal?!!! Get me Non-Halal!! I want it to be Haram!!

Previously (many years?) there was no such directive, why now. Is it because the Dutch has banned the burga recently?? Mild retaliation? How many turkeys are imported from Dutch?

Oh, come on, Anonymous Malaysian.

Must you be sarcastic and disrespectful even towards what our religion prohibits us to eat, i.e. non-halal items? The ban is only a seasonal one. They did not attack any other parties (albeit not intentionally, I doubt they were planning to cut their profits), so why must you attack us?

(Yes, I am a Muslim.)

It's the responsible of those who 'mengharamkan' things to openly clarify without any doubt and prejudice on the methodology of how they deem the bird became 'un-halal'...(I'm getting to like this word 'methodology' a lot...)

Then only the 'rakyat', knows which bird is "haram" and which is not...Not all birds belong to the same flock...
So, come on those department involved in "tugas 'haram-mengharam'",stand up and clarify.....
I'm getting a big fat turkey with potato stuffing this Christmas...Sorry KFC...

Well, to put it simply, certain birds are halal and some are not.

The ones which are, are not eaters of cadavers, possess certain kinds of talons, et cetera. There are some (and much more detailed) other restrictions that I am not knowledgeable enough to elaborate upon.

However, any animal that is halal, but was not slaughtered in the name of God, will cease to become halal meat for the consumption of Muslims.

JAKIM is a body that I trust in determining what is halal meat and what isn't, and I would rely on their words, lest I be transgressing the prohibitions of my faith with regards to this matter.

I hope I've enlightened you a fair bit, devonic.

Thank you for the 'anonymous 2.53 am' for your kind enlightenment...But with much respect, the request I made was, for Jakim to clarify their stand to all M'sian..Whether the bird falls in the 'haram' category due to the reason as my friend 'anonymous' said or due to other reason such as unhygienic or else...I do respect Jakim's view as it(Jakim) is acting for the benefit of the Malaysian broadly,Muslims specifically.
Thus as a policy making agency,Jakim has to come forward and clarify why the bird is 'haram-ed' so that it does not raise any doubt in the action for all layers of people..i.e. the methodology used.
If we go to to Holland, there's a lot of Muslims there...I'm wondering are they eating turkey this coming Christmas or are they getting their turkey from Malaysia....A wild guess....
